Cricket formula for determining outside night time temperature??
Apparently there's a formula for determining the outside night time temperature by counting the number of cricket chirps in a specific amount of time and multiplying it by something specific and then you get the temp.

Has anybody ever heard of this before??

Does anyone know the actual formula?

I thought it would be fun to try out sometime with the kids.
Either that or we could just check out outside temperature gauge. :D

Can't remember the exact formula, but a book I have upstairs says it.

5. # of chirps per 15 seconds plus 40 gives degrees Fahrenheit
tree crickets (those really loud bright green ones) not black house/field crickets.

6. Hmmm...interesting! Ours were off by 10 degrees
maybe they were the field crickets?

I didn't ask them. :D

Thanks for passing along the formula, though! :hi:

7. My crickets are indicating that it's about 6 degrees warmer here than the weather channel says.
Weirdly enough, that's probably right because our ridge tends to be warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter than the official temp.
