Who are you to judge me?
I'm glad you live in your perfect world where you do everything right and never made a mistake in your life. But until you've walked in my shoes, you have no fucking right to look down at me with your critical glare.

I have survived things that would have left you quivering in a ball, all the while getting stronger and wiser than you could ever hope to be. You whine about your financial "difficulties" (Didn't you just say offhandedly that your life if so much nicer since you hired a cleaning lady?) and criticize poor people, saying how *easy* they have it.

When I open up and tell you what it's really like to be poor, what it really means and what it feels like, you have the audacity to wonder how I could ever put myself in that position. How I could ever be one of "those people"?

Well, guess what? Looks like we both ended up in the same place in the end. But guess what, I worked harder, faced more challenges and overcame more hurdles to get here. And yet you put on your superior airs. I know the truth.

And we may have ended up at the same place, but I am infinitely glad that we arrived as two very different people. I have something that you'll never have: compassion.

It was bad enough that the boss even offered reassurances after she left that she's full of shit.

14. You should hear the other one when it comes to immigration
I usually try not engage them on topics of poverty and immigration. To them, the poor and the illegals are the reason that they are not living a better middle class life. The brainwashing is complete. Once in awhile, I'll poke them for fun, but trying to engage them in these topic is an exercise in frustration.

The one that made me so angry last night was talking about how the poor "have it so easy." They get everything handed to them, like money for college. (She has one in college and paying to send the other to a school in the next town over because her perfectly fine school isn't good enough.) I told her if the thought the poor had it so good and easy that she could easily join them since their life was so much better. That's what started it all.

2. We often suffer from the notions we entertain regarding others...
But I've found that the reason I get upset when someone criticizes or judges me, is because I am my harshest critic.

6. No one has to be perfect to judge another's behavior.
After all, we're all imperfect, but we all judge George Bush's behavior as President every day on this website. We adjudicate him to be incompetent, corrupt, dishonest, and criminal. Pretty harsh judgments. Are you saying we shouldn't be allowed to do that, even if we might be absolutely correct in our judgment of him?

11. One's a public figure who's decisions
have impacted millions. He's an elected official who put himself up to be judged.

I'm a private person who does not direct public policy and she was assessing my previous poverty as a character flaw.

I hardly think the two situations are equal, much less similar.

28. Of course the situations aren't identical, and she was dead wrong to
refer to anyone's previous poverty as a "character flaw".

But when I make that statement I am also making a judgment that previous poverty is *not* a character flaw.

26. Human imperfection is necessary for survival.
I reject the idea that we are all sinners. There can be only one standard of perfection. Life is fluid and dynamic, always changing and in motion. No one adhereing to a fixed standard of perfection will last long around here. It precludes learning and adaptation.

I told her I once was on welfare and how hard it was and how the system is rigged against the poor. She already didn't like me. This just cemented it.

22. What they don't realize, prolesunited,
is that some of them can end up in poverty.

All it takes is one (or two) major catastrophes in their lives,
like a medical emergency, losing your job and life savings and
they are there.

That's what they don't realize.

23. No kidding.
I used to represent debtors in bankruptcy court. A lot of them were apologetic when they told me they wanted to file. I told them plainly: I don't like creditors or their lawyers. Creditors are in the business of convincing people to go into debt. The debtor is an amateur and cannot be expected to be an expert in such matters. The law made bankruptcy available and there was no shame in using it. Of course no one chooses to get sick or lose his or her job.

19. Yeah! You are exactly right.
You are the one that has experienced life in all its hardships, I know exactly what you mean. The best part is that you really do know the truth and the act of superiority is wasted on you. I feel sorry for people like her. They will never know what it is to truly appreciate life, because they will expect a good life as some sort of right, and they will never feel they have enough because they never had to overcome anything to get there.

I'm glad you arrived as two separate people too!

That's very sweet.

There's obviously more emotional baggage wrapped up in that that I'm not going to get into, but I was upset last night when I typed that and just needed to vent.

I do see her attitude coming from her own place of insecurity and fear.
