My cat scares me.
My little Renfield, a 9 lb tabby, has become the scourge of our backyard in San Francisco. He has killed every gopher and every mouse that has had the misfortune of entering the yard. Then he started to crouch in the grass and jump up and bat hummingbirds out of the air.

So, we thought we'd hamstring the little booger with a bell on his collar to even the playing field.

Then I awoke to find a gopher dead in my living room and Ren standing next to it batting around his collar (which he had removed) around on the ground. He gets it.

Now he doesn't bring in the carcasses anymore.

1. Was he named Renfield because he eats spiders?
If so, it looks like he's been moving up to bigger, juicier prey. What's next? A cow?

2. this is going to sound strange
... but the night before I was going to pick him up from the SPCA, I had a dream of him and his name was Renfield. As it turns out, he is a proficient bug and varmint killer and he also runs like a spider when he and the dog are running through the house. So I guess in retrospect I wasn't trippin' too terribly off-grid in my dream.

Ren's access is to a well-fenced (as in fortress) back yard - PERIOD - where he runs around with our dog. Most of time he spends snoozing on my monitor while I'm working.

I think the bell has worked though because since the incident I reported, he appears to have ceased and desisted. And the weirdest thing is in his former career of mayhem, he brought the hummingbirds in live and we would do a catch and release. Strange.

No worries, and I really do appreciate your admonition, but I work at home and keep a close eye on my critters.

12. My Patty used to bring me the butts of field mice that she had
conquered. Because we let her out, she died squished under a truck.

I hope your beautiful hunter has a better passing. :(

No worries. I am very careful with my critters. The guy's dog (who used to live here before us) bit the nextdoor neightbor, so he built an impenetrable fortress of an enclosure in the backyard.

I'm sorry your kitty met such a horrible demise. SF is pretty scary sometimes. :scared:
