1. I remember watching this during its very first showing on Comedy Central.
I was in my dorm room at Regis University, less than a month into my first semester of college, and the past week had just been unimaginably weird... I was alone, and when I was listening to Jon speak, straight from his HEART, it brought tears to my eyes. I had heard so many moving monologues by so many comedians and so many news anchors and read so many terrible stories... But his was the one that moved me so much, his was the one that seemed so human and real.

Not that the others weren't real or heartfelt, but Jon's monologue connected so well.

My favorite moment of that episode was the Moment of Zen, when Jon brought out the most adorable puppy from under the desk and just hugged it as the audience applauded and the credits rolled. That moment has stuck with me all these years.

And now I'm tearing up again. Gimmie a minute... Gimmie a minute...

There we go.

3. And some assholes at Faux News had the audacity...
...to make fun of him for his opening monologue.

Troglodytes.

4. It just sickened me when I heard that Gibson had mocked that moment.

That monologue was one of the first instances when I saw that there WAS going to be good in the world again, there there WERE still good people in the world, and that we WOULD be okay. Jon Stewart helped give me hope and helped knock some sense into me so I could go on with my life without fearing that every airplane I saw over Denver would burst into flames or crash to the earth.
