2. Robin Williams.
Jack Nicholson is a fine choice, but even he can't quite match Williams in doing drama and comedy equally well.

I've always liked Japanese cinema, but in my old age I'm loving it more and more. Hollywood has grown ever so stale.

On Edit: I rent Kagemusha from Blockbuster in Van Nuys years ago and they lost it after I returned it and tried to stick me with the bill. I'm with Netflix now.

15. James Woods.
I have seen this guy take roles of people who were in no way sympathetic, and play them in no way sympathetic, but nonetheless play them human--I think that's a talent. What I like about him is summed up in this "Cigar Afficianado" interview:

Often drawn to unsympathetic characters, Woods feels that memorable villains are integral to the storytelling process. "Film is a dialectic. This is the thesis. This is the antithesis. And there is the synthesis. You guys have your great protagonists and great antagonists. It is a battle of wills. All great movies have that kind of a mano a mano thing going. I never make judgments about the character that I play. Never. I just play them. I mean, that's who he his. This guy is so evident in the interviews. He was so evident in the press. I saw all of his subterfuge and all these kinds of levels of bullshit. And how crafty he was. You know, I'd admire the guy more if he said, 'Look, I just don't like people who are different from me and I'd shoot them any chance that I get.' If you can convince me of that, fine. At least I'd say, 'Well the guy's a lunatic, but at least he has the balls to stand up for whatever lunacy he believes in.' But on top of everything else, he was a coward and a liar! I mean, he shot a guy in the back and then he lied about it!"

http://www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/CA_Profiles/People_Profile/0,2540,30,00.html

He's played characters like Roy Cohn (if you have not seen "Citizen Cohn"--I must recommend it), Rudy Giuliani, Byron DeLaBeckwith (actual people--that are "complicated"--even disliked!--this is to me, kind of brave) and characters that are unlikeable, like Lester Diamond in "Casino"--with verve--he sinks his teeth into the role and you just get that he's embodying a "person", not a cariacture. I am impressed with the challenges he gives himself as an actor.

I admit I don't understand his political affiliations and sometimes support of W and Giuliani (despite self-describing as a Democrat?) especially given his intelligence (rumored to be like, an IQ of 180--insanely high). But nonetheless, I find him a riveting actor. And he was kind of hot in that Vampires movie. And in Shark. Kind of. Though he's totally old as my dad.
