College kids: Can you pick your schedule or is it picked for you?

When I went to Wisconsin I had a limited list of classes I could choose from for my major, but I had the freedom to decide which days and times to take those courses and put together my own schedule - preferred late morning/afternoon vs. early morning.

My brother went to Purdue and the admin give him his schedule the week prior to the beginning of class. He had to take this class at this time and so on.

Curious, what was it like for everyone else?

1. We pick

I'm pretty sure that's more or less standard. Is it his Freshman year? sometimes they pick for you the very first semester.

2. He graduated, but they always picked for him

3. At the University of Toronto where I just graduated

we could take pretty much whatever we wanted, whenever it was offered. There is no core curriculum, and a lot of leeway in program requirements. So, if a course was offered three times per week, we could take it whenever we wanted as long as there was room. OTOH, most classes were only offered once or twice a week.
