$150 just for classroom supplies for the kids.
Edited on Mon Aug-13-07 12:27 PM by LaraMN
I haven't even bought clothes or shoes for them, yet.

It's pretty damn sad when I get the school supply list for my kids, and the teachers are having to solicit for kleenex, tape, pencils and things I think our government ought to at least provide.

I love how we fund public education in this country.
Pathetic.

4. Public school? For how many kids? That's crazy.
I don't think Wisconsin public schools are allowed to charge a textbook rental fee...I know kindergarten here is a $10 building fee, a $10 classroom fee, and we could fill out the supply list for about $15-20 (maybe less if we can find her old backpack).

My law books were $518 this semester. But that's voluntary, and I own them now and can do with them what I want after the semester.

10. Hope it's deductable........
$500 to rent schoolbooks at any school is nuts. Oh well, that's what you get for not home schooling your kids, you see, you would only need a Bible for that - and they GIVE those away.......

3. Sending our kids off to war is patriotic. Educating them, not so much.

Our money priorities are so screwed up in this country.

21. Amen to that. Imagine how it would be if we funded education and not war
But keeping the masses uneducated helps build the war machine. It's disgusting. I've already spent over 200 on supplies, not including clothing or school fees. The truly sad part is that I know the teachers feel the pinch even worse because they take the responsibility to buy for the kids whose parents can't or don't send the stuff with their kids. Every time I hear some asshole talking about teachers being over paid it makes me livid. They're underpaid to begin with and then need to subsidize their students on top of it. God, I'm so tired of the injustice. We need the fucking revolution already!

6. Eeech...does that include Jack or is it just your two older kids?
I remember my first supply list -- a pack of pencils, an eraser, a notebook, a couple of pocket folders. The school provided just about everything else.

The strangest thing on Kiddo's kindergarten list is 6 glue sticks plus 2 bottles of regular glue -- I guess I'm glad they've got so much art but that's a lot of glue.

15. It hurts

...I can tell you that in the 70's my teacher bought art supplies for the whole class so we could have art. She also bought toilet paper so we didn't have to bring any from home. Some back woods school you may ask....nope Chicago Public Schools.

I know that I stock up on supplies to fund the children whose parents can afford to.

I do feel your pain though, I've got 2 in college and the price of books is a crime.

Cheers :toast:

I was shocked to learn she had to buy pencils!! PENCILS??!! I guess we should be glad they haven't sold the school buildings yet. I mean, if we're not even providing pencils...well, I'm just dumbfounded.

19. I have never had children (not my choice) and yet pay school taxes.
Edited on Mon Aug-13-07 01:33 PM by Reciprocity
Here in Texas if you own property you have pay school taxes, if you rent you do not. This is the school only source of revenue, that I know of besides the state and government subsidies. I don't think this is fair. Not that I'm saying I should not do my part but I resent only property owners having to pay.

22. If your renting a property
The owner is paying the school taxes & that cost is rolled in to the rent.

Saying that if you rent you don't pay school taxes is actually not true.

25. I also don't have kids and pay school taxes -- and I'm glad I do
I consider it investing in the future, so to speak. I feel everyone has a civil duty to support our schools financially.

And, I don't make a huge amount of money.

I just think that it should be shared more evenly, and not solely on the backs of property owners.

20. As a Kindergarten teacher, here is what I ask for:
Each child needs to bring:

A clearly labeled shoe box sized workbox (Dollar store plastic bin w/ lid)
filled with:

1 Box Of Crayons
1 Box of Scissors
1 Box of Markers
1 Box of Colored Pencils
6 Sharpened Pencils
1 Glue Bottle
2 Glue Sticks

and for the "class pot"

1 Box of Kleenex
1 Roll of Paper Towels
1 Bottle of Spray Cleaner
1 Package of White Copier Paper

We provide all the construction paper, copies, art supplies, books, games, sports equipment etc. and it costs a fortune.
Asking the parents to offset the cost of that once a year so that we DON'T have to raise our prices (Private Program)
seems the best way to go about it.

My kids tend to need to replenish their workboxes in January- everything but the scissors.

23. Way back when I was in school we bought our own school supplies.
Notesbooks, pens, pencils, colors and later on notebook paper.

The school didn't provide any of that stuff.

We had to buy workbooks, any textbook we would have lost or damanged.

All the school supplies were on the parents.

Little MB and I went clothes shopping on Saturday and it practically killed me. This is her first time in public school so she was CRAZY about picking shoes and clothes since she always had to wear a uniform.

You would have been proud of her - she picked out some killer boots.:loveya:

32. Target and CVS are running some pretty good specials.
I was just at CVS.

The thing that gets me here is that there is no warning for parents, especially in high school, how expensive it is going to be. $75 for Senior dues, $10 for chorus, $75 for an all access pass, the list goes on and on.

Couple that with the fact that each freshman needs a $100 graphing calculator and you're talking big bucks.

I've been warning a friend of mine, because she lives paycheck to paycheck and has twins.

Fortunately, by the time she needs those calculators, my eldest will be done and she can use them.

The other thing that totally pisses off is the show choir fee $375 :wow: You can't just spring that on people! You have to give some type of warning that the fee is due.

Last year, I was the Choral Booster VP and I made a real stink about that because there were some kids who actually dropped out because they couldn't afford the fee. That's just wrong. On so many levels.

And, the PTA President? Well, she's a moran who wants to get a lighted marquis for the school. :wtf:

I'm so tired of people who have been educated beyond their intellect.

Rant/off
