My dogs are acting weird
Running around and barking and sniffing the air. Being in southern CA maybe I should brace for an earthquake, or maybe I just need a shower.

1. My dog does that before earthquakes.
Hope that's not what it means for you, but just in case, batten down the hatches.

5. I remember being in Rome (the one in Italy) in the late 1970s....
Trying to sleep in a hotel. Dogs were going nuts barking. I fell asleep, and learned the next day that there had been a big earthquake a ways away from Rome.

I never felt anything, sleeping the sleep of the dead, but they closed down the Forum the next day because the shaking had been bad enough to cause possible damage.

But I will NEVER forget the dogs barking.

Hope everything is okay where you are and that it is just a fluke.

7. I wasn't totally jesting either - they did this the other day
and there was a quake in Los Angeles (I am in Bakersfield).

8. Oh no....
I totally believe the dog thing.

I also remember hearing on the news after that enormous earthquake in Alaska at Easter in 1964 about the dogs barking uncontrollably right before the quake.

That night in Rome I was so damned tired (my second night there and the previous night with very little sleep after flying across the Atlantic) that I fell asleep despite the dogs and shaking.

Really, I hope that everything is okay where you are in Bakersfield. And elsewhere in SoCal. Also NorCal.

13. There was a scientist in Southern Calif. years ago who had a fair record predicting quakes
His big secret? He monitored the LOST PET section of the L.A. Times. Said the number of lost critters always goes up before quakes.

9. Or it could be there's a huge-ass cat ouside.
My dog goes nuts whenever she smells a strange animal nearby.

11. We have more wild cats in this hood than I can count
I hope that is all it is.

They usually bark at the neighbors and such (can't see em, 6' fence all around the yard) - but no one is out tonight, and now buster is scratching on the fence to try and escape...

12. Earthquake inbound- no shit.
I live in Tennessee and we get very mild tremors from time to time. My guys go nuts a couple of days before I feel them. They seem to be more sensitive to things.

15. Oh man! I read the first part of your post and said to myself "I hope the
op doesn't live in So. Cal. (I'm in West L.A.) because that can mean an earthquake" and then I read that you do. My kitties mellowed out sleeping and my neighbor's dog is mellow too and he's really neurotic and barks a lot. Hopefully we're okay....

17. Dogs FINALLY went to sleep and knocked it off - BUT
There were clouds that rolled in here and blotted out the sun, wife said it looks more like smoke from a fire somewhere, so that may have been why they were sniffing the air and freaking out.

We had that last weekend here, overcast because of fire.

16. Yeah, my critters were acting strange the other night before the 4.6 here.
Lot's of horses in my neighborhood too-
they make a racket before a quake too.
Needless to say, I keep my ears open.

18. Maybe they are reacting to the meteor shower?
They are obviously confusing Perseus with Sirius.

Those doggies think that the great dog God Sirius is angry and throwing fire down upon the Earth while intoning in a stentorian voice, "BAD DOG! BAD DOG!"

19. Or maybe that's just what dogs do, occasionally
(heh -- I said "dog do")

Then again, as a chihuahua owner, I'm the owner of neither the most intelligent nor the sanest of breeds. But it still might be all in your dog's head. Maybe he hears a noise you're not attuned to (or incapable of hearing), or the smells are different tonight (maybe a new forest fire popping up), or -- most likely in my comparatively limited experience -- she just wants to go for a walk. Meet the neighbors. Say hi, piss on a few seemingly unrelated things, bark alarmedly at the neighbor's new hat. The usual.

Of course, if I'm wrong, you know that the bathtub, archways, and outside are the safest places to be right? ;)

20. As noted above, I think Fire is what did it
This went on as 'clouds' rolled in - turns out it was probably smoke.

I got a mini-dachshund and a mix of that breed with a jack Russel:

21. Seriously cute kid
The human one, too!

My daughter and I play games in which we tell the dog how much we love him, more than anyone else, just within hearing of the other person.

My daughter's still a little pissed about why the dog gets to sleep with me and she doesn't: "Honey, it's not that I don't love you ... I just love the dog more, and there's only room for me and one other person on this bed, so I chose the dog." It can go on for hours .

Understand, though that there's a certain Addams Family quality to all of this.

(and on a directly related note: my dog, too, does weird shit when SoCal is burning, and we're two hundred miles away usually)
