9. they are both great in the summer
the limoncello should be kept in the freezer. You can serve it straight up or on the rocks or use it to make a martini. It's also delicious over vanilla gelato with berries for dessert. YUM

The Zen green tea is fairly new and makes a great Zentini or Zengria. It's made by the same company who make midori. I'm still trying different ways to have it, but I do enjoy it. Very different and not as heavy as some liqueurs.

6. I bought a bottle of the Zen Green Tea Liqueur, and don't really like it.
Not straight up, anyway - I was very excited, since I'm a total green tea snob, but it has a funny taste.

I will try mixing it with other stuff at some point - I think it'll make a great cocktail mixer.

11. there is a martini recipe on the back
but the way I make it is that I've substitued roses lime juice for the fresh lime juice. The zengria is made with white wine (usually a savignon blanc), served over ice with a wedge of lime. Try either recipe and you may change your mind. :toast:

21. That's another point of pissing me off - it's not a martini recipe, it's a cocktail recipe.

And Martini, when the word is actually used properly, which it rarely is in this day and age when ignorance and tactlessness and mediocrity are celebrated, is a proper name and thus capitalized.

I will try that recipe - that COCKTAIL recipe - at some point.

and the idiot restaurants and bars who decided a few years ago to rename all cocktails as some variation of "martini".

It really pisses me off.

I have my own little world, and every now and then the real world moves in on it and fucks it all up. Like the big cigar craze of the early nineties - here I am, enjoying my cigars and its own little cigar world, and all of a sudden every fucking moron idiot asshole yuppie is "really into" cigars, driving the prices way up, fucking up the whole system, speaking their bullshit nonsense, and then leaving when the next big fad comes along... which seems to have been Martinis, an elixir that I have loved for 20 years, which all of a sudden became what every moron yuppy scum had to drink, driving up the price of gin and cocktails in general, and then a couple years later moved into a newfangled but utterly bankrupt cocktail craze with such blasphemies as the Chocotini and bars offering "Martini Menus". I hope to God the yuppy scum will soon move into something that I haven't enjoyed, like Boy Bands or gourmet popcorn, and get the fuck out of my world.

5. Chartreuse, and Maraschino Liqueur
Can't make an Aviation or Hemingway Daiquiri without the Maraschino.

And I just love the taste of Chartreuse, both regular and yellow (prefer the yellow for straight up, but the green goes better in cocktails, especially the Drink Without A Name).

19. It's bloody Chartreuse flavored!
:P

Seriously, however, it's an herbal mix - the color chartreuse was named after the color of the liqueur. It's one of those alcoholic beverages that monks invented hundreds of years ago and still hold the recipe secret.

I don't know how to describe except to say that it's VERY botanical, and almost, but not quite, medicine-y. It has a slightly strong and serious taste, kind of flowery but mostly herbal; sort of in the way that gin is stronger and more herbal than, say, vodka (but Chartreuse tastes nothing like gin, so don't confuse my words in that sentence).

The yellow version is a little mellower.

Good stuff.

28. Are you familiar with these guys?
Germain-Robin, especially, makes one of the highest quality cognacs on earth. He's also got a one-of-a-kind liqueur (not listed on the site, but detailed in the mailer they send out quarterly) that you'd probably like, since you like chartreuse. Get on their mailing list--it's probably the best piece of junk mail I get, and I get some pretty good stuff.

32. Even their "budget" cognac is transcendant.
He's got his own website (Germain-Robin)--hopefully, it'll have a link to a story the SF Chronicle did on him a couple of years ago. Fascinating story about who he is and how he ended up in Mendocino County.

Oh, and his varietal grappas are beautiful, too. If you've got a BevMo on that side of the country (or something similar), they may have one or more of his cognacs.

15. My Big Fat Greek Ouzo Story
Middle of the day, college years, home for holiday break. Nothing to do/time to kill, so me and a few buddies head over to the local waterside mall to hit a few places and have a few drinks. First place we hit is a Greek restaurant and, at about 3:00 on a Tuesday, it is pretty quiet. As we are sitting at the bar having our first round of beers, a huge, hairy, very tipsy man comes over to us, bear hugs us all, and asks, "What are you drinking?" "A few beers," we reply. "Wrong!" shouts the man. He slams a bottle on the bar and says, "Ouzo! Because when the boss drinks, EVERYONE drinks!" It was at this point we noticed his gleaming yacht moored just outside the restaurant.

We drank until late in the night and, as we were leaving, he refused any money from us. We offered to tip the staff, but he said, "The boss will take care of everything!" He even paid for our cab.

What a night.

Not liqueurs.

Big difference - liquor meaning "alcohol" or "spirit", a generic term for all distilled alcoholic beverages.

Liqueur is a sweet alcoholic drink that has been infused with flavoring or flavorings, usually herbs, spices, flowers, etc.

My friend went to Greece for the summer and he brought back several bottles of Ouzo. We drank them all and continued to pursue quality Ouzo in the states.

I like the licorice taste and how it gets cloudy when you put ice in it.
