Jack the Dog comes to live with us today.
I met Jack the Dog at a Tractor Supply Company store in Owosso last Saturday. There were three dogs sitting politely at a table with two women. They were with "LAST DAY RESCUE" a group that snatches up dogs and cats from Animal Control on the last day before they get "the gas."

The three were ALL cute, ALL well behaved, and I was starting to leave after pets and hugs to do my shopping, when I looked behind the table.

There was Jack the Dog.

Black Lab/Shepherd mix, medium to medium small size, slender build, floppy ears, COAL black with a tiny white spot on the chest, 1 1/2 years, CALM, and relaxed. I knelt down to give him some pets, and he gave me his paw and LOCKED eyes with me.

We now have FIVE dogs. As my office mate Naomi sez: "PETS HAPPEN."

12. He's too sentimental...
He should have chosen the rich guy that came in after me.

Actually, they told me that the black dogs usually go last. Wonder why.

19. That is weird
My own dog is black with a white "tuxedo" patch on her chest. She went last because she was long-haired (some weird terrier mix: I suspect Tibetan genes. Imagine a scottie with long legs and floppy ears.). It's a pain to sweep up those fuzzy black hair clumps, but I don't think they be any more appealing if they were brown or white. I threw in the towel and had the groomer give her a kennel cut this summer (short everywhere except head and tail), and we're now both a lot happier, particularly in the Florida heat.

Are black dogs supposed to be bad luck, like black cats? Thousands of happy black lab, scottie and newfie owners would disagree.

3. ok -- you are the best.
and this is for Jack --

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.
--Franciscan prayer

Jack, may you be blessed in the name of the Holy One who created you, and may you and Tyler Durden enjoy life together and care for one another in peace.
amen

5. Why THANK you.
That was beautiful and greatly appreciate it.

Hopefully his recent "modification" will curb just little of his urge to mark territory: he peed on Brigette's head by accident, but hey, so has Vinnie.

7. Good on you!
The Tibetans teach that saving an animal destined for slaughter is major good karma. Plus, you get to enjoy what sounds like a match made in heaven. Bonus!

21. Tie a bright red ribbon on Jack
Which is what Tibetans do for "rescued" animals.

It also looks cool as hell.

14. Kudos to you!
:hi:  :D :loveya: Jack the Dog needed you....and hugs to you for stepping up to the plate. :D :pals: All of the shelter dogs we have adopted over the years have "locked eyes" with either me or my husband, and they were the ones who went home with us. :)

BTW, our dog Casey was almost a "last day" dog. We adopted her from the shelter two days before her scheduled euthanasia. She had been there for over three months, and she needed us. Badly. She was a year old and a total knothead, but when she realized she was with us for good, she settled in and became a comfortable, happy couch potato. :)

16. YOU are the one that should get the Kudos!
I was going to volunteer at the shelter, but I got an anxiety attack with all of those dogs just NEEDING me. I had to get mine from a rescue organization, and so it was more by accident. YOU went there with courage and compassion. You my BUD!

PM you a pic of Jack tonight if I get a chance tonight, just for you.

20. You are awesome!
I wish I could manage a few more cats. 3 is my limit and will not go beyond it. But every time I see cats that need adopting I seriously want to bring at least one more home.

:(

22. We have nine animals now.
Five dogs, four cats.

Obviously, we are certifiably insane.
