I had 6 of them growing up.

Yertle
Yertle II
Yertle III
Yertle IV
Yertle V
and Max. (named max because I had him the same time I had Yertle V.)

I have a turtle calendar and more than a few stuffed turtles.

They're my favorite animal.

16. Maryland...
near DC.

Every time I turn around they're developing yet another small swatch of woods inside the Beltway. It really pisses me off, because the animals depend on those little areas; and the houses they build in there are junky-looking. :(

11. I could never eat it...
I had a taste once when I was a little girl; and I immediately felt guilty afterward. I mean, I was on the verge of tears.
I feel too strong a kinship with them...

Do you know the kid?

I saw an article in the WP that said he's the latest sensation!

21. When I was a kid
we'd visit my grandparents in Florida every summer. Whenever we'd go to the beach, we could see where a turtle had come up on the shore, laid her eggs, and returned. I treasure that memory...

25. Native Americans believe that we each have animal totem spirits
which guide us, teach us and protect us. If you feel particularly drawn to or resonate with a certain animal or creature, chances are you have that as a personal totem in your life.

Turtles carry the "medicine" or power of Mother Earth, they are very connected with the Goddess, appropriately enough. :D
Here's a cool link which explains the energy of the Turtle totem. Enjoy, it's good stuff!

29. When I was a kid, probably 4-5 years old
I was at an aquarium in Massachusetts and saw a tank with a turtle swimming around. I didn't realize the tank was full of water and I thought the turtle was flying. I ran up to my Dad and Uncle and said, "Look!! Look at the flying turtle!!" I remember my Uncle grimacing and saying, "Turtles don't fly!"

It's understandable why you'd think that. Those enourmous tanks are pretty mind-boggling to a kid!

35. Turtles are my daughter's fav.
She has one that looks like the turtles in the first picture. His name is Clunksky. She takes him for walks and stuff, and he and the cat play together. It's hysterical.
