Poll question: Are using curse words and being literate mutually exclusive?
Edited on Tue Jul-31-07 05:09 PM by redqueen
I certainly think not... but apparently there's a good number of people who see those two traits as just that.

What say you?

1. Using curse words well requires literacy
Ben Folds is one of the most literate songwriters of his generation. But he has quite the potty mouth.

6. That would depend on whether you are a child or an adult.
Since children haven't formed a well rounded vocabulary, then yes, the two are mutually exclusive. Even many adults have such a limited way of expressing themselves that they have to resort to the base form of expression. Some adults can incorporate curse words into their speech and be quite literate.

8. That's an incorrect assumption
Since children haven't formed a well rounded vocabulary, then yes, the two are mutually exclusive.

No. I was a book-worm as a child and I enjoyed using cursing around my chums and my dad. It was another language that we used. MANY people are like this, not just adults.

Thinking use of "base words" is a sign of illiteracy is a form of snobbery.

28. Just because you did it doesn't make it excuseable.
But then, anyone can justify doing anything. As for children having a well rounded vocabulary? Don't make them out to be adults, because they aren't. The haven't had the years of education and experience that makes them well rounded individuals. I read a great deal, as a child; just about everything I could get my hands on, and, although my vocabulary was more expanded than the average child my age, in no way could it match that of an adult's.

67. You know, anyone , even the brightest of us can misspell a word,
now and then. I wasn't going to get into your spelling, word usage or grammar, but since you have decided to take issue with my spelling, and try to infer, because of one misspelled word that I am illiterate, then what's fair is fair. Oh, and I won't bother pointing out the misspelled word. And, looking back through your posts, I see you have a great deal of trouble with usage, and especially punctuation.

14. No, in the absolute sense curse words and literacy are not mutually exclusive, but
Excessive use of curse words is less than ideal. Curse words are great when expressing very strong emotions or for effect, but they should not be a routine mode of expression since if they are used too often, they lose the effect that a curse word should have on the psyche.

25. I wouldn't say it's shameful to use a curse word too often
I would only contend that there isn't much point in using a curse word when you don't have to. If someone who routinely uses curse words curses, I don't think twice about it. However, if someone who rarely uses a curse word curses, then I notice it and realize that person is really expressing some deep frustration or emotion.

You get people who constantly talk like, "I fuckin' went to his fuckin' house, like he said, and the fucker wasn't fuckin' there."

Much more effective:

"He asked me to meet him at his home at 3:30 in the afternoon. I was quite prompt, but he hadn't arrived and did not during the several moments I waited. I consider that extremely fucking rude."

53. "eloquent profanity"
When asked by his nephew about his profanity, (George) Patton remarked, "When I want my men to remember something important, to really make it stick, I give it to them double dirty. It may not sound nice to some bunch of little old ladies at an afternoon tea party, but it helps my soldiers to remember. You can't run an army without profanity; and it has to be eloquent profanity.

A) I hate prohibitions of words. You might as well just say that all painters are forbidden to use green.

B) Smart, literate people of my acquaintance are able to really USE swear words and make them work in marvelous ways.

C) Restrictions on speech are restrictions on speech. Irrespective of whether the wannabe censor is a prude, prig or snob, it's all the same bullshit.

38. I don't believe so.
I think it more likely that a vocabulary consisting mainly of expletive will be found in the less literate.

I'm fairly literate and work with a great many literate people. Sometimes nothing quite satisfies like a good "Fuck!"

(I just know some wag is going to read that last sentence and offer to help me out. )

39. My grandfather used to say...
My grandfather used to say, "Each curse word a person knows is the net subtraction of three IQ points." (He also said, "We already have an Ignorance Tax-- it's called the Lottery!" but that's for another discussion...)

I'll be honest-- as I move through my widely varying circle of friends, I've noticed the more educated and literate the person, the smaller the amount of foul language.

As for me, if I find myself cursing, I try to realize that there are existing non-curse words that are better suited, more emphatic, more civil and much more precise in meaning than the common and predictable 'f*ck' or 'sh*t'.

Well.... yeah. It was me.

But before I get piled on, I judge only myself for the language I use-- my example was simply an observation I've made re: my acquaintances and friends.

And yes, I do curse-- but I try not to.

As an aside-- it's easy to be honest on a message board; put me in a room full of my peers and my answers might vary.

Well, I'm the first to admit that I haven't hit the world-wide philosophy hot-spots ("...is that martini half empty or half full?" or "if no one is around to see her dancing topless, is she *really* dancing?" ), and my friends and I would probably be considered merely a step or two above the benighted, the half-educated, and the sub-literate.

But like you, I only go off of my own personal experience, and that's the great thing about people's experiences-- no two are alike (although I humbly submit that my naive and ingenuous sentiment might clearly be wrong...)
