Father and Son
I see them ahead on the trail through the woods
A father and son

The boy’s about seven
Skinny arms and legs
His head bare and his hair tousled
A small pack across his shoulders

The man is maybe 30
He carries a pack too
A water bottle is tucked in it
Probably snacks too and maybe fishing gear

The boy stops and points
The man crouches down and speaks to him
I see his hand carve out the shape of the stream
Or the gully or the animal’s path
Whatever they’ve seen

They rise and walk on
The sun sprinkles through the trees
And dapples their backs
The boy looks up and reaches for his father’s hand
They walk on together.
