Hud with Paul Newman...Great Film
Just watching it for the first time on TCM. One of Paul's great performances as a almost total asshole. Melvyn Douglas, Patricia Neal and Brandon de Wilde are equally good. The scene where they have to kill all the cattle due to foot and mouth disease is a tough one but they captured its reality very well.

1. He is mean through and through in that one.
Remember the publicity around the Newman "H" movies? Harper, Hud, Hombre? Of course, I'm giving my age away when I refer to it.

2. I remember.

One of the last truly great actors around. Do you remember him in the Philadelphia Story? Truthfully, I can't think of a film I've seen him in that he didn't give an outstanding performance.

11. What role did he have in The Philadelphia Story? I can't place him, but it's
been a few years since I last watched the movie..

6. One of my 3 favorite movies
the other 2 being Dr Strangelove and the original Manchurian Candidate (guess I like B&W movies). I was in Jr High when Hud was filmed down the road here. Crikey, is Paul Newman that old? Double crikey, am *I* that old ??!!!

7. So you lived close by to the little town where the characters go?
What is the name of that town?

8. Claude
on Hwy 287 about 30 miles SE of Amarillo. IIRC the ranch scenes were filmed on part of the old Goodnight spread (late 1800's Panhandle rancher)

9. I'll bet some of the buildings used in the film are still standing.
I'm glad they filmed in B&W it looked better than color, I think.

10. I haven't been to Claude
since we passed thru there in 2002, moving back to Amarillo (back for me, 1st time living here for hubby). Yeah, I'd say the "downtown" is mostly lined with the same buildings. Also, IIRC, James Wong Howe won Oscar for best cinematography.
