15. I got to yell that at him once
He was marshal of the Stampede Parade once, and as he passed, waving and smiling, I shouted "Don't call me Shirley!" He heard me, pointed, and laughed.

I think he's one of the happiest guys in show biz. He spent many years specializing in playing heavies, then since Airplane he's had another completely different career. Good for him, I think he's a genuinely nice guy.

7. His role in "Nuts" was different - an abusive, psychotic John, into rough sex,
who is killed by Barbara Streisand.

Surely that was a different role for him.

8. It is odd to see him in earlier, non-comedy roles.
I keep waiting for something funny to happen.

10. He was washed up before Airplane!
A good gig for him in those days was a spot on "The Love Boat"... After Airplane! he had a short-lived TV series, and at least 10 movies, each of which probably paid him more than I'll earn in my entire lifetime.

It's not like he was Paul Newman before... "just another B-actor on the late late show."

12. I saw the beginning of the old 'Poseidon Adventure' recently - he was the captain of the ship
It was impossible to take him seriously in that role anymore. I kept waiting for some sight gag in the background. :D

14. He was also in "Forbidden Planet"
He had a dramatic acting career at one time. Well, that kind of fell by the wayside.

16. I always remember him as Lt. Frank Drebin
Mayor: I don't want you on this case anymore. That's my policy.

Drebin: Well when I see five weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the park in front of a full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards, that's my policy.

Mayor: That was a Shakespeare In The Park production of Julius Caesar, you moron. You killed 5 actors! Good ones!
