Is the music in this song from another song?

I've heard this song so many times that it's starting to make me question myself - is the actual music of this song (circa 1981 Hong Kong) from an earlier song that came from the US or maybe the UK? Obviously, the lyrics are not from the US, as its sung in Cantonese...

But, the more I hear it, the more I think it was maybe from a song or TV show or movie from the 1960s or 70s? The song is from a TV show that is very famous in China and the show is credited with launching the career of Chow Yun-Fat and making him a mega-star in China.

Of course, I could just be going even more insane and be totally off base because I'm starting to understand some of the lyrics.

I was trying to recall the top movies and TV shows from the 70s to come up with something, but I was born in 1966, so my memory of the 70s is not exactly perfect.

I know the show itself was influenced by the Godfather movies.
