Shasta, my beautiful keeshond is gone

In re: to this post from last week:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=6667727&mesg_id=6667727

It's been a heartbreaking experience, facing the reality of her age and illness.

She was the kindest most loving creature I have ever known. (She was like the beast toward the end of "Beauty and the.." She let birds walk right up to her and happily watched them drink and bathe in her water bowl.)

Mothering my children never left me time for the attention she deserved from me. Her need to be in my bedroom over the last month was, I thought, out of fear over a new AC unit in the back yard. I let her come in and sleep next to me more than I usually would but, Sebastian, our cat, her best friend, always wanted to be where she was and since "he" can't stay out of my lap when I'm working I would end up kicking them both out.

Shasta always watched over Seb, would bark her fool head off until someone noticed that he had somehow managed to get himself locked outside. Damn kitty would jump on her and scratch at her to instigate play. She had every reason to hate him but she loved him and they were always together. They slept together, got into the trash together...

Poor Seb, he misses her - doesn't seem to know what to do now, without her.

I cried like a baby on the floor at the vet's office when I held her for the last time, reminded once again of how poorly I handle loss. I had to run away for most of the day to pull myself together before telling the kids - what a coward I am.

That was the hardest part of all - telling the kids.

12. They were such good friends
I can respond to my children's questions and fears. It is different with Sebastian. We've talked about it a lot, in the wee hours when he cuddles up to me in bed, lovingly head butting me and nibbling my nose. But he has been quietly hiding under my bed and in my closet, for the most part - not at all his usual behavior. He seems so lost.

I loss my Sara last week also. She was ten years old, she died of bone cancer.

I hope this helps you at this very said time. Hang in there.

18. Wow!
Thank you. That describes how I feel, perfectly.

I swore off having more animals (and not for the first time) but have already started looking at possible companions for Sebastian (at the pound). He would like that. It would help the kids too. It would help us all.

I"m just waiting for the time when it feels right.

I don't want to replace Shasta. That would be impossible.

24. skygazer, thank you
I do feel guilt. So much. I knew she was getting old. I started commenting to my kids about her age more than a year ago. (to prepare them?) But I didn't know she was sick. The cataracts that I believed to be a sign of old age were, in fact, from diabetes.

I quit trusting my instincts many years ago. There is such a fine line between instinct and fear.

I couldn't even talk about her until today. It's been a week and a day - last Saturday. I haven't been able to say her name. Her food dishes are still where she liked them. Her bed has not been moved. I found my 13 yo daughter curled up, asleep on it...

9. For Shasta
One of our friends lost her Keeshond/German Shepherd mix to cancer about two months ago. Jake was the world's greatest dog -- we adored him, and so did our big Maine Coon boy, Mojo.

I hope that Shasta and Jake are having a great time playing together at the Rainbow Bridge.

Julie

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

We got a card in the mail - signed by all the vet's personnel. May have been sent the day of, over a week ago. I haven't looked at the mail or called up my v-mail since it happened.

It was kind, but it ripped open the wound.

31. What a sweet face
My first Sheltie had diabetes. He spent his last night at a major vet school and died there before sunrise, in November 1992, despite everything they tried to do to keep him alive, and they tried everything used on humans. I wish I'd had the courage to have the vets release him from his pain that last day. At least my next two Shelties benefited from his experience, though their deaths earlier this year were no less painful. You get to a point where the only thing you can do to relieve their pain is to stop it.

I understand your pain. Shasta knows the personal sacrifice you made for her. I used to tell my Shelties that they'd never know how much I loved them. But now I think they do know.

I'm so sorry.
