Rest in Peace poor little kitten
An update to this post:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=6692752&mesg_id=6692752

Kitten died sometime between 11:30 last night and 5:00 this morning.

When we got home from watching the fireworks I checked in on kitten. He was sleepy and weak but he had used the litter box and his tummy was growling. I thought it was a good sign.

Although he didn't eat much more than 1/2 ounce of formula I figured he was just tired and would be hungry by morning.

Mr. Debi checked on kitten in the middle of the evening and he was out of bed in front of the bowl of formula and water dishes.

I found him 1/2 in bed and 1/2 out and cold this morning.

I guess the bastards who hate cats won this one. Hope the fuckers are happy. :grr:

3. Yeah
Part of me wishes now that I wouldn't have cleaned his wounds and caused him unnecesary pain. Had I known he had only a day to live I would have just held him and scratched his ears for 24 hours. Bastards

6. At that young, his chances of survival were really slim since he was already
pretty much starved. I don't think there was anything you could do more than you did.

If you find yourself needing to feed a baby kitten in the future, you may want to try an eye drpper instead of the kitten bottles, because the bottles are so hard for them to suck from.

You just have to be very very careful not to give them too much at a time.

At one time, we had ten cats due to my husband bringing home dumped cats.

9. We fostered 10 kittens last year at this time
5 from a stray that came in and had her kittens on a rainy night (on our sun porch) and 5 more from a momma stray that was hit by a car as she tried to move her kittens across the street (I searched our ditch to find the kittens...and lucked out finding them after a long night outside). One momcat and 10 kittens was too much so we supplemented by my syringe/bottle feeding the kittens and helping mom groom them x(. We were able to find homes for all of them(including mom).

My husband thinks that the infection on his wounds was probably further along than any of us thought, and he agrees the kitten was probably too far gone when he found us. Damn it!

38. We kept all ten. One died of congenital congestive heart failure and
two have been killed probably by raccoons in our neighborhood.

The first one (Amber) was my kitty and she loved me as much as I loved her. But after she was spayed, she couldn't bear to be around the other cats. She was terrified of them for whatever reason. She would take off and be gone for days, even a week or so at a time. Then she would come home, and I'd carry her past the other cats to my bedroom where I fed and watered her. She would sleep with me and go out the window in the morning. She'd stay around for a couple of days and then disappear again.

One day, she just didn't come home again. About a year after that, our neighbor was in the vacant lots across the road from us and found a cat skeleton and just enough of the brindled calico fur to recognize her.

Three months after that Mr. Squeeks disappeared from our yard. This surprised me because he always stayed very close to home. Three weeks after he disappeared and after (and frantic trips to two animal shelters), some neighbor kids came by and told me they had been playing in the same vacant lots and found Mr. Squeeks in the same condition as Amber.

So we now have seven cats. I make sure all of them are in by dark these days.

Here is the story of Elvis. http://journals.democraticunderground.com/1monster/1

We all do what we can, but sometimes that is not enough.

10. At least he was comfortable - on a soft cushion with fleece around him
he had fresh water and formula - I had bathed him with a warm wash cloth (just like a momma cat would so) and we scratched his ears and rubbed his belly after we tried to feed him. If I'd know he was going to die I would not have hurt him by cleaning his wounds and I would have stayed home from the fireworks to hold him (and I would not have gone to bed - I would have stayed with him). Thank you - I hope he is in a good clean warm and happy place. The poor baby deserves no less.

11. I was supposed to get a kitten, but...
...it was not meant to be I guess. My neice and nephew found a tiny kitten, starving, dehydrated and near death, but they nursed it back to a basic level of health. They offered it to me because they already have 3 cats, 2 dogs and a rabbit, and they couldn't take on any more responsibility. I accepted, and they told me they would drive the 90 min. to bring it to me. But 10 days passed without a word from them, and finally yesterday I found out that they took it to the pound instead, because it had ticks. So I never even met the kitten, and that's probably a good thing because I might have fallen in love with it and then it would be harder for me if they had turned it in. I had been planning to post pictures of it here and solicit suggestions for its name. But, I guess it was not meant to be.

29. Thanks very much.
I'm over it now, I was a little upset because they didn't tell me anything, and for 10 days I was anticipating getting a kitten, and they didn't even tell me they gave the kitten to the pound. I only found out while talking on the phone to one of the kids. That was the weird part about it. I have a cat so at least I'm not catless. But I appreciate your kind thoughts!

12. I'm so sorry
Our first cat was named Merlin. He had a magical name because he was a magical cat. Like your sweet kitten, he was thrown from a car window. Luckily, Merlin was probably older than your little guy and fairly scrappy. We brought him home from an animal rescue organization. (He chose us. He was in the back of the cage; I wanted the cute gray cat with the white paws instead. DH picked Merlin up, though, and Merlin attached himself to DH's chest. What could we do?)

We lost Merlin in August of 2001 due to fibrosarcoma. Until then, though, we spoiled him rotten.

I hope that your little guy is curled up in the sun and being groomed by our Merlin at the Rainbow Bridge.

Julie

25. I rescued 8 kittens
a few years back. They all survived except one. SHe'd eat and play but she never seemed to grow much. One night she just died. In retrospect I think she may have had some intestional malfunction that kept her from absorbing nutrients, but there would have been no way of knowing that. Although she was tiny, she appeared healthy in every other way.

Still it's hard. We got attached to her in the few weeks that we had her. It doesn't take much for them to steal our hearts.

23. I had to go find my fat boy after I saw this.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry for you for the heartbreak and I'm sorry for the kitten that he found finally kindness from humans when it was too late.

My fat boy Chaucer was a kitten born to a stray. The kittens and Mom were taken in by some kind people who kept them in their house until they were old enough to be separated from the Momcat. THEN they took them all to the local animal shelter to be placed up for adoption...

Our companion animals bring us love and devotion in Little furry bodies that are built to last a shorter time than our own. We are gifted with them and entrusted with their care in return for that love. I am sickened when that gift is rejected in such a callous way.

Blessings to you and your family for trying to help make a difference.

Laura (human companion and walking lap for Chaucer D. Cat)

30. My friend Amos had a similar start in life
Fortunately he wasn't as malnourished as your little friend but he had the scraped, bloody face that was indicative of being tossed from a moving car. There are plenty of options if you have an unwanted animal but abandoning them isn't one of them. Amos lived for 16 years after he found me and he was among the finest, dearest friends I have known. The idiots who do this sort of thing to kittens will never know that kind of friendship but that should be the least of their punishments though in my mind it would be the most devastating one.
I offer my thanks to you and your husband for caring for that little one. I offer it on behalf of all the abandoned souls in this world for whom the extension of your caring hand has reduced their aggregate suffering by some small but precious and hard-won measure. What you have done is wonderful and I'm sorry for your loss.

Even though the kitten was thrown from a car by somebody, the last part of his life he was treated with lots of love (which all animals, not just kittens) deserve.

You did the right thing taking care of the kitten, and although you might not feel this way...I'm proud of your handling of the situation to make him feel better and loved.

I'm torn between my admiration for you and Mr. Debi; and my anger at the bastards who hate cats.

I fostered kittens for the Wright County Humane Society when I was over there. I lost one to feline leukemia, so I have some sense how you feel.

I'm sorry it ended this way. Thank you for being there for him
