Any Deep Purple fans...I have an extra ticket to the NY show
It's for the NY show in Feb and I can't wait to go and see them.
I am going to wear dark sunglasses and close my eyes and imagine them young. I don't want to see these guys looking as old as my Dad because it would effect my enjoyment of the show

1. Ahh, Deep Purple
The best concert I ever attended was Deep Purple, ZZ Top, and Santana held at The University of Texas many years ago.

2. How many years ago was that?
The first show that I ever went to was when I was 12 years old and I became a fan back then.

3. I might lose the other half of my hearing
that I lost at a '74 Ritchie Blackmore concert.

No thanks! :-)

4. Those guys are still around? Any original members?
Or is it a bunch of guys with the rights to the name?

6. Everyone except RB & John Lord
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 01:05 PM by Lostmessage
Ritchie Blackmore was fired years ago and he started Blackmores Night and they play at Medieval Festivals.

It looks like John Lord has retired.

7. Lord, I didn't know they were still touring.
Is it the original band members?

I saw them back in the 80's during their first reunion tour and they were very good. I shudder to think what they might be like now.

Where are they playing? I can't imagine that it is a very big venue. Have they been reduced to playing club?

And can you imagine what the groupies look like now? Be afraid, be very afraid...

9. LOL
They are playing the Beacon Theater for two nights. The groupies could range from old to young depending on if there are any gold diggers looking for a free ride if you know what I mean.
They don't look so good themselves and they might be pretty desperate.

11. No Ritchie Blackmore? Sad
Steve Morse is also excellent but no one can go off on random guitar tangents during the last verse of a song like Ritchie can.

They are looking old, but I bet they can still jam the hell out of Tool or Limp Bizkit!

13. They were pure talent
The old bands are so much better then the people that are out now. Years ago you didn't need to see what the band looked like before you started liking their music. It's the exact opposite now because they have to look good before the record company will sign them.

14. Have You Seen "Come Hell Or High Water"?
It's the live DVD of the reunion, which i think was in 2000. (Not certain, though.)

Man, is Richie a tool in that video. At one point, he and Jon Lord shift gears and aren't in sync. (Lord goes with the bass player, Richie tries to shift gears but waits to long and the other two guys couldn't change with him.)

Anyway, he picks up a water bottle and throws it at Jon Lord. ON STAGE! In front of 15,000 people! For the rest of that show (there's clips from more than one concert on that DVD), Richie stands over to his side of the stage and quits interacting with anyone else in the band.

Like i said: A tool!

17. I rented Perihelion from Netflix
It's from 2002 and it's pretty good. I am going to have to rent the one that you are talking about because I want to see the part with the water bottle now.

16. Steve Morse is great...
but I have hard time seeing him playing Deep Purple stuff. In my opinion, no Blackmore, no Deep Purple. I'm glad they still have Ian Gillan. Ian is the only DP vocalist. That David Coverdale shit they did in the late 70's and early 80's was POOP!

19. Gotta Have Lord Too!
The interplay of Lord and Blackmore, while Paice and Glover just grinded out that big foundation is what MADE Deep Purple.

Having others play those parts, even as good as Morse is, doesn't work for me.

Hey, i'm a Satriani fanatic, and i've got one DVD where he's playing live with them. As fantastic as he is, i'd still rather hear Blackmore playing with them. No tension between Lord and Satch. Too much mutual respect. Mutual respect was not what made Purple sound like Purple. That may be the ideal in most bands, but not in Deep Purple.

BTW: I agree about Gillan.

10. They wished
The Beacon Theater and they won't be getting any red carpet treatment there. I imagine that they miss the limo rides, booze, drugs and groupies.

Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 01:34 PM by Lostmessage
I loved the sound track from Jesus Christ Superstar and he was on and along with Ian Paice. He has one of the best voices and he can still sing as well as he did on that old album.

24. Don't want disillusion you
But I saw 'em here about two years ago and they really sucked! I was terribly disappointed because the very first heavy metal album I ever bought was "Machine Head" which was, and is a good piece of work. But in spite of that, hope you have a great time.

28. Since we've established it's in NYC,
I'd love to go, assuming the date works for me - when is it, and how much is the ticket?

I haven't been to a rock concert since Rush back in '96. Egads.
