This fucker killed a 60 year old corrections officer here in Salt Lake today. Then went on a high speed chase before finally getting tackled in an Arby's. I'm not a supporter of the death penalty, but I'd like to think there's a special room in hell for scum like this and the sooner he's there, the better.

7. Modern prisons are terrible.

They are intensely racially segregated. Those strong enough to defend themselves on their own can do so, but everyone else has to group up for "protection". Those divisions are primarily along racial lines nowadays...the Aryan Brotherhood is really big in all of the US prisons, offering to help defend whites for a simple pledge of loyalty. The blacks and hispanics have their own gangs, and other prisons have large asian gangs.

The self-segregation is appalling, and it's worsening as time goes on. Tattooing like this is a fairly normal way to mark yourself for protection (though this particular guy seems to have taken it to extremes). The ironic thing is that many of these guys WERE NOT racist when they were originally incarcerated. The racism was imposed on them by the modern prison system.

Even our local county jail here has to segregate prisoners. Blacks go in one wing, whites and asians in another. The hispanics are on a different floor, divided between a Norteno and a Suereno/MS13 wing. No mixing is permitted, and even their outdoor rec times are staggered to keep them from bumping into each other. Despite that, the county honor farm had a lock-down earlier this year after a race riot between the Aryan Brotherhood and a black gang left a couple of black men seriously injured.

There's no way to know. He may be the real deal, or he may be some loser who got himself tattooed up to overcompensate for his perceived weakness and "prove" himself to his fellow gang members. It happens.

The fact that he killed the guard does prove that he's a grade A scumbag though, so it's probable that you're right. Still, talk to any doctor that performs tattoo removal and they'll confirm that there's big business in removing racist or gang tattoos from people just released from prison. Lots of guys do it just to survive, but aren't the real deal.

in institutions.

if you remain unaffiliated, shit gets rough for some guys.

it depends on the prison too.

supermax gladiator academies are run by the gangs.

the hacks are in on it, they often get caught up and either bring in dope or have allegiances to one or another type of gang.

people have the impression that inmates (not saying that you do) are stupid. in fact, they are some of the shrewdest, most conniving bastards out there.

the profound intricacy of psychological manipulation, information gathering, and social networking is truly breathtaking.

these "gangs" even have reading lists. they get into machiavelli, walt whitman, nietzsche, sun tzu, and the law. even if they are of low intelligence, being an effective convict means being able to fake your way through anything. these are people who have no probably with selective conscience.

the same person who will stab an enemy in the yard 37 times with a scraped toothbrush is more than likely the same guy who would defend a child to the death. it's a really fucked up morality, something a mainstream suburban, safety conscious citizen type will never be prepared to understand.

i don't condone it, but i understand it.

there are some high caliber predators out there. i'm not lauding them for this, but in a way i am. for society's refuse to be that resourceful and maintain some kind of pride while being underneath the system, let along outside of it, says something about the tenacity of the human will.

even if the net result is patently offensive and despicable.

i've heard of situations where the hacks will set up "punk pens" and set up disrespectful inmates to get gang raped or beaten for a host of "infractions."

they reward the guys who carry out orders with cookies or sneakers or some shit.
