Poll question: If you could only watch ONE type of sports on TV, what would that sport be
Ok, we live in a world of choice. But what if the powers to be in Television were to eliminate all sports but one (and that would include both professional and collegiate ranks).

What one sport would you want them to keep?

1. Male gymnastics
Because I appreciate the skill and dedicated hard work that male gymnasts go through.

32. All kinds of auto racing
The summer's not complete without a John Force interview!

IIRC John Force is number three on the all-time event wins list behind Richard Petty and Michael Schumacher...and as far as championships, it's not even close: Force won eleven NHRA season championships (ten in a row), Petty and Earnhardt have seven apiece and Schumacher has six.

52. And you're saying Michael Schumacher doesn't have a pit crew?
The reason NHRA events are contested over a quarter-mile distance is that in the early days of drag racing, they quickly learned that cars can't go much farther than a quarter-mile at full throttle without blowing up.

Drag racing at that level is all about three things: reaction time, keeping part of the engine together for six seconds, and tire adhesion. Those races are won and lost in the first 20 feet.

OTOH, there are forms of racing where that doesn't matter--witness Ron Fellows at the 2001 24 Hours of Daytona. His transmission was overheating, so he pulled the car into the pits for half an hour to let it cool and still won by ten laps.

48. Addendum: I want my Indy back!
The one with all the big names (IRL has that), oval AND road courses (CART has that) and the Indy 500!

That said, I'm really hoping IRL can finally engulf the moribund CART and make everything all right again.

Or maybe Gaelic Football (a close relative of Australian Rules).

Fox International has some odd ones & these pop up occasionally. Let's hear it for the Gaelic Athletic Association!

Horse races; if they would outlaw racing 2 and 3 year-olds

Ranch horse competitions

gymkhana

Poker tournaments

33. Football but only because the NHL sucks anymore.
Hockey is my favorite sport but it has been ruined by the idiot Gary Bettman. Too many teams, watered down talent, the trap, less fighting and trying to market for TV has all ruined the fastest, toughest sport in the world. The playoffs still rule but the game neads a serious overhaul.

Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 12:11 AM by Beaker
I virtually never watch sports of any kind- they just don't interest me, and I just don't understand their appeal to so many people...the money that's wasted on sports programs for schools is downright criminal.

One of the biggest problems with this country is it's OVER-emphasis on competiton over cooperation..."Might makes Right"..."the Winner writes the history books"..."Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing...", and stuff like that.

It's also another reason why our political system is so polarized and so fucked up- to a lot of people, the issues don't matter a whit, to them it's just the D's vs. the R's, and their family has always voted this way, and so we will too- the other party sucks...

46. Golf, because watching the pros helps my game
Plus it's virtually year round, unlike so many of the others, and conveniently lasts 4 consecutive days per week but no more than that.

I like to video my swing and compare it side by side to the top pros, usually for a laugh at my rapid and cramped backswing.

Oh, and this is a necessary post so all the simpletons can chime in below, with all the reasons golf is not a sport.
