13. Why thank you
I made that pitcher myself...

yeah, that's it.

With my own two hands.

Well that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I'm good today. I just got home from my weekly Pilates class, took a shower, and ate Chinese leftovers. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, what could be better?

How are you? Staying out of trouble?

All you need is theme music for such a day. In the future, try not to mention shower and sun in the same sentence, hehe.. I'm lightheaded now :)

All is well here. It's quiet for a Saturday.

6. Stu Miller “blown off the mound” balk - That's ol' Candelstick for 'ya

Before the game, it was the warmest day we had had in a while, Miller remembered, and the flag was straight down - no wind before the game. That was unusual. By the seventh inning, it started to flutter a little bit. By the eighth, the darn thing was just about torn from the flagpole - which was normal for Candlestick. But, I'd never seen the wind as strong as it was that day. I put my foot on the rubber, anchored myself into the wind, and I leaned in toward Colavito.

Just as he was about to deliver his first pitch, a sudden gust of wind caused Miller to move his shoulder inadvertently about three or four inches, he said.

I wavered back and forth just a little. But, the American League bench was looking right at me and they went to hollering Balk! I moved but the wind forced me to move. The umpires didnt call a thing at first.

Plate umpire Stan Landes took off his mask and walked toward the mound - then motioned for the runners to move up one base.

in baseball history.

But the rest of the country did find out that day about the Candlestick wind.

36. No, I gotcha
I should've acknowledged that you obviously know it's BS, but I hadn't had any coffee at the time. :hi:

That wind was nasty, though. You'd go from a T-shirt or tank top in the first three innings to a jacket in the seventh. And you needed that jacket.

37. On occasions the opposite could be true for a night game
It could be windy as stink all afternoon, and maxing toward game time, but by the seventh or eight inning it could be dead calm. I mean dead 'light a match' calm.

46. San Francisco has a 'rule of thumb'
It blows 22 knots under the 'Gate' at 2:22 pm most summer afternoons. That same wind is funneled down off the San Bruno Mountains, through the old rock quarry, and directed straight at the 'Stick'.

Warren Spahn was my favorite pitcher, Willie May's, too. ;)

Or maybe Don Drysdale:

I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a Drysdale pitch.

43. When I was a kid
it was Koufax and Drysdale, then Claude Osteen. But something about Koufax just mesmerized me. Maybe it was that powerful, leg-driven overhand delivery or the fact that he typically struck out nine or 10 guys.

But, yeah — Drysdale was a mean mofo, especially coming in sidearm. Willie Mays wrote, "Drysdale, who's a good friend of mine, like to kill me a couple of times, and he knows it." There were some great head-hunting expeditions between Drysdale and Marichal, or Perry. (I wish umpires weren't so pissy about that now. You throw at a guy, his pitcher should get a shot at one of your guys. That's baseball.)

I've always preferred home-grown ballplayers, and TJ was an import, coming from the White Sox. I got some good photos of him, though, in 1985 when the A's got him and he was rehabbing with Modesto.

55. And just think
In the '60s, you could see Gibson vs. Drysdale three or four times per season.

Or Drysdale vs. Bunning. Or Bunning vs. Marichal. Or Marichal vs. Koufax.

(Or Marichal vs. Spahn, like on July 2, 1963. After 15 innings it was 0-0. Marichal didn't allow the Braves a run in the 16th. Then, in the bottom of the 16th, Mays hit one out to win it.)
