So, are there any songs about Iowa?

Only one I can think of is "The Duke of Dubuque."

Iowa groomed and grand,
Who ever knew
Such BEAUTIFUL Boo
grew in this glorious state I'm in
and I'm indebted indeed,
to wonderful weed,
Iowa groomed and born!
Oh, I owe a LOT!
to Iowa POT!
and that ain't just
Iowa Corn.....

Nobody ever wrote a song about Hoosier ditch weed....

3. We've got trouble (trouble), right here in River City
Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 09:08 PM by DemoTex
Starts with a "T" that rhymes with "P", that stands for pool.

Trouble, trouble, trouble in Iowa.

On edit: Wonder why the tail-end candidate doesn't make that his/her campaign song? Eh?

4. "Iowa Stubborn" from "The Music Man"

Music: Meredith Willson
Lyrics: Meredith Willson
Book: Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey
Premiere: Thursday, December 19, 1957

Townspeople:
Oh, there's nothing halfway
About the Iowa way to treat you,
When we treat you
Which we may not do at all.
There's an Iowa kind of special
Chip-on-the-shoulder attitude.
We've never been without.
That we recall.
We can be cold
As our falling thermometers in December
If you ask about our weather in July.
And we're so by God stubborn
We could stand touchin' noses
For a week at a time
And never see eye-to-eye.
But what the heck, you're welcome,
Join us at the picnic.
You can eat your fill
Of all the food you bring yourself.
You really ought to give Iowa a try.
Provided you are contrary,
We can be cold
As our falling thermometer in December
If you ask about our weather in July.
And we're so by God stubborn
We can stand touchin' noses
For a week at a time
And never see eye-to-eye.
But we'll give you our shirt
And a back to go with it
If your crops should happen to die.

Farmer:
So, what the heck, you're welcome,
Glad to have you with us.

Farmer and Wife:
Even though we may not ever mention it again.

Townspeople:
You really ought to give Iowa
Hawkeye Iowa
Dubuque, Des
Moines, Davenport, Marshalltown,
Mason City, Keokuk, Ames,
Clear Lake
Ought to give Iowa a try!

5. "The Iowa Waltz" by Greg Brown
(Very haunting melody. Brings a tear whenever I hear it.)

Home in the midst of the corn,
The middle of the U.S.A.
Here's where I was born,
And here's where I'm goin' to stay.

Iowa, Iowa,
Winter, spring, summer and fall.
Come and see, come dance with me,
To the beautiful Iowa Waltz.

We take care of our own, take care of our young,
Make hay while the sun shines.
Growing our crops, singing our songs,
And planting until harvest time.

6. "Iowa", Dar Williams
I've never had a way with women, but the hills of Iowa make me wish that I could,
And Ive never found a way to say I love you, but if the chance came by, oh I, I would,
But way back where I come from, we never mean to bother,
We dont like to make our passions other peoples concern,
And we walk in the world of safe people, and at night we walk into our houses and burn.

Iowa oh ooo oh, Iowa oh ooooh ooo oh I-Iowa

How I long to fall just a little bit, to dance out of the lines and stray from the light,
But I fear that to fall in love with you is to fall from a great and gruesome height.
So I asked a friend about it, on a bad day, her husband had just left her,
She sat down on the chair he left behind, she said,
"What is love, where did it get me? Whoever thought of love is no friend of mine."

Ioway oh ooo oh, Iowa oh ooooh ooo oh I-Iowa

Once I had everything, I gave it up for the shoulder of your driveway and the words Ive never felt.
And so for you, I came this far across the tracks, ten miles above the limit, and with no seatbelt, and Id do it again,
For tonight I went running through the screen doors of discretion,
For I woke up from a nightmare that I could not stand to see,
You were a-wandering out on the hills of Iowa and you were not thinking of me.

Ioway oh ooo oh, Iowa oh ooooh ooo oh I-Iowa
Ioway oh ooo oh, Iowa oh ooooh ooo oh I-Iowa

7. I did a USO tour with a band in the Dominican Republic in '65.
We did a medley with RECOGNIZABLE AND LOVED songs from every state in the union. The soldiers of the 82nd Airborne and the US Marines loved it. Just a hint of home and soldiers go crazy.

8. The state song is, "Oh Iowa"
O Iowa!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The midwest strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Iowa, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Iowa, we stand on guard for thee.

O Iowa, we stand on guard for thee.

Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 10:48 PM by ironflange
Edit: GOD DAMN IT!!! THIS FRIGGING SONG IS STUCK IN MY HEAD NOW!!!

Includes this song:

All I Owe Ioway
Marty:
I can hear 'em callin' hogs in the clear Ioway air,
I can sniff the fragrant whiff of an Ioway rose!
Chorus:
You've got Ioway in your heart!
Marty:
I've got Ioway in my hair!
I've got Ioway in my ears and eyes and nose!
Oh, I know all I owe I owe Ioway,
I owe Ioway all I owe and I know why.
I am Ioway born and bred,
And on Ioway corn I'm fed,
Not to mention her barley, wheat, and rye!
Marty and Chorus:
I owe Ioway for her ham and her beef and her lamb,
And her strawberry jam, and her pie!
Marty:
I owe Ioway more than I can ever pay,
So I think I'll move to Californi-a!
Chorus:
What a shame!
Emily:
What a shame! (What a shame!)
What a shame! (What a shame!)
Chorus:
You'll be good and gosh-darn sorry when you go.
Man:
Don't I know!
Emily:
When you leave your native state,
You'll be feelin' far from great!
You'll be good and gosh-darn sorry when you go!
Marty:
I'm a seed of Ioway grain.
Emily:
You're a breeze that Ioway blue. (?)
Marty:
I'm a drop of Ioway rain!
Emily and Chorus:
You're a drip of Ioway dew!
Emily:
Oh, I know all I owe I owe Ioway.
I owe Ioway all I owe and I know why.
I am Ioway born and bred,
And on Ioway corn I'm fed,
Not to mention her barley, wheat and rye!
I owe Ioway for her ham and her beef
And her lamb, and her --
Heppenstahl:
Strawberry jam!
Melissa:
...and her pie!
Heppenstahl:
I owe Ioway more than anyone should owe,
So I think I'll start in owin' Idaho!
Emily:
All together!
All (and Hepp. backing):
What a shame! (What a shame!)
What a shame! (What a shame!)
You'll be cryin' like a baby when you go!
Heppenstahl:
Don't I know!
When I leave my native heath,
With my lip between my teeth,
I'll be bawlin' like a booby when I go!
Emily:
You're a seed of Ioway grain,
You're a breeze of Ioway blue. (?)
Abel (drunken):
I'm a drop of Ioway rain!
Melissa:
You're a drip of Ioway dew!
All:
*repeat chorus*
*selected solos*
