3. I do the same thing
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 05:26 PM by Marrah_G
Mostly because it's just not worth the argument. There are certain topics where either you become a complete cheerleader for the local popular crowd's opinion or you get flamed and sent nasty PMs by bullies. Some days I don't mind the fight, other times It's been a long day and it's not worth dealing with the jerks.

I almost just erased this post too, but screw it, you are not alone :)

12. People are nasty...
And then, when called on their nastiness...they act all aghast. Same stuff, different day. Same people. I use the term people loosely. I tend to like to think people would care. But quite a few obviously don't.

14. some people (and it seems especially so on the internet) don't seem to have
the ability to empathize with others. They rarely seem to be able to put themselves in another person's place and judge how they would react to a situation.

I'm not talking just of the Lounge, but of the internet (and real life too all too often) in general.

It's become my favorite way to get a Freeper at work, ask them what they would do if China invaded and occupied the US. I let em get all hot and tough talking about how we'd be sniping em and using guerrilla tactics then I innocently ask them "Do you suppose that's what the Iraqis are doing?"

the looks on the faces are priceless

I think that's why I'm not in the 'cool kids' group around here, I usually just ignore the mean chit and move on.

15. an alternative explanation is
one hears only one side of a story, considers that the only truth, and starts taking up battle for this side.

most stories have 2 sides to them.

20. And then sometimes, people are smart enough to form their own
opinions based on not hearing any stories, but instead based on their own interactions. Which is, in fact, the ultimate let down. It happens time and again to me...and bothers me all the same.

22. but that's the point! why in the world would you take up battle for something
that has nothing to do with *you* ???

although I must confess about the only flame wars I find myself in are about Gay Rights and I'm an old straight married woman so that issue doesn't effect me personally either.

I think it's rather sad that we have lost so many DUers to these silly Dramas that never should have been on a public forum in the first place. But that's just my opinion, your mileage may vary....

23. I think the removal from the "real world" is what creates so much of the
ability to be mean.

I have said some not so nice stuff today perhaps. But I feel better. It's bugged me for awhile, and now it's gone. I just don't like to see gangpiling...regardless of whatever the supposed "stories" are.

27. absolutely! to gang up on anybody is wrong and against every pacifist
thing I've ever learned or believed. and I know people that don't come in here anymore *because* they were blasted and lied about. It has hurt some very fine people, starting with Cindy Sheehan all the way down to our newest member

That's why I just don't play (usually) OK OK the AA thread was one that struck too close to home and I came out guns blazing, but still tried to treat the naysayers with respect and humor.

for a progressive message board, there is way too much meanness. If we can't play nice, how can we expect others to do the same? How can we lead by example if the examples we are portraying are against everything we claim to believe in? How can we attract people to our cause if we are no better than the Republican assholes who want to nuke everybody?

As it is in the micro, so the macro will form. It's a pity

33. I sometimes think...
"Maybe they've grown past it." And I ALMOST post a pleasant response to someone, only to see the spiteful shit continue 30 minutes later. Then I come up with a humdinger of a response, but the angel on my shoulder says, "Don't do it!" So I delete.

And then, WHOOPS! Back on ignore.

43. It's generally not worth it to respond to bullies. Just like child bullies...
if they don't get the attention they seek, they're not getting what they want. I think, however, there's only so much a person (or people) should have to take.
Just remember the motto:
