Nursing mothers should drink beer
A friend of mine who used to live in Germany said that after her first daughter was born, the milkman, along with the regular milk deliver, delivered a sample of special beer for nursing mothers.

It's a perfectly natural thing and you can tell that she is very comfortable with it and doesn't give a damn what people are thinking.....my kind of woman...:)

18. It is a perfectly natural thing, but I am somewhat modest and like
to keep my boobs for me, my husband, and my kid when I have one! That is just me. I am not downing on her for being out there with it!

24. No, I think your discretion is on the mark.
We need a happy medium between obsessive prudishness and overt toplessness! Most nursing mothers, in my experience, are very discreet.

26. Yeah, I know. In my 32 years I can only name one instance when I've seen this (so far)...
I keep wondering if this is a "crisis" blown out of proportion, supported by anecdotal instances of women wrongly asked to leave businesses, etc. Personally I really didn't care either way until I suggested a more modest approach and was personally attacked... and attacked some more. Then I got a little pissy.

Is this the War on Public Breastfeeding?

31. there's so much that is overkill
whatever happened to persuasive arguments?

i blame television and instant gratification.

we as human beings are so far seperated from ourselves that we don't even know who we are, so we overcompensate by latching onto anything that gives us unique meaning with such fervor that we become fundamentalists.

32. I highly recommend you read the book "Mediated."
It discusses this concept to a T.

In my opinion, it's a result of the market-driven atmosphere we live in. We are personally appealed to by EVERYTHING trying to earn our vote or get our money. Our politicians appeal to us. The products we buy do everything they can to attract our attentions. I think Americans grow up to naturally believe that the world caters to us individually, because, well, our society is set up this way.

So now we have cottage industries developed around inciting people to very narrow causes that may not be as problematic as they seem. To do that, each of these cottage industries appeal heavily to the individual's ego, which causes the me-centered nature of identity politics.

39. And don't forget what James Fallows said about McLaughlin!
John McLaughlin, that is, meaning the pundit and TV host who once worked for the Nixon White House. Years ago journalist/author James Fallows referred to John McLaughlin as a titanic figure of evil (Tell us how you REALLY FEEL, Jim!) because McLaughlin had popularized the shout-fest as news program. The emphasis is on conflict, and participants are forced to boil their point of view down to a sound bite or two. It goes without saying that the system favors the aggression and, to some extent, shallowness.

Here's chapter one of one of Fallows's books:

30. You know what? You're right.
I wrote something like that in one of those flame war threads a while back, and even had the "audacity" to suggest that this is connected to the modern notion of "me-centered" life in America. I could not believe what happened afterward.

All I have to say is: If you want to change the status quo on this issue, this is NOT the way to do it.

While the other women look confused, I'll turn to them and snap, "It's the FEMALE BODY. GET USED TO IT!"

Then afterward I'll eat cornflake chicken and pasta at the Olive Garden.

53. If she didn't want to be discrete she wouldn't have a blouse over her tank top
I think they just got her at the right angle/moment because no matter how discrete you are, unless you put a blanket or something over the baby there's going to be a brief moment of naked nipple. I love that she's so confident that she can nurse in public even with the possibility of the paparazzi.

I always covered up when I nursed - I had some cool shirts with flaps, or I wore a lot of vests....

It would be really nice if our culture were more tolerant about bodies....
