There is a spider running around my lamp

at the base of the bulb pedistal, following a gold paint rim. She's gone around clockwise about 50 times. Now she's trying counterclockwise.

And still can't figure out that the lamp is only 3 inches wide. :eyes:

1. it's the tragedy of inate behavior that arose on evolutionary time scales....

Insects and arachnids use strong light sources to orient at night-- they evolved that behavior because the main source of light-- the moon-- is so far away that it remains a stable reference over a moderate amount of travel time. They can't cope with light sources that are CLOSE to them-- they behave as though they are far away, i.e. you're traveling in a straight line if you keep the point light source at X degrees.

4. She stopped
She stopped several times and looked around. Now she's on the opposite side of the lamp from me. I guess she figured out she wasn't covering new territory. :D

That's cool about solar navigation in arachnids.
