Healing vibes and thoughts for GOPisEvil, please.

While he's supposed to be leaving on a jet plane any second now, he's actually back at my house in bed and floating away on percocet. We spent last night in the ER, and it appears that he has a kidney stone. He is not released to fly until it passes, and we have no idea how long that may be. In the meantime, I have to go to work each day so I can't be there to take care of him as I'd like.

Let this be a lesson in "be careful what you wish for." All yesterday afternoon and evening he kept saying how he didn't want to leave today ... well... we know how that turned out. :D

Poor guy. I guess they can't dissolve the stone, can they? Someone told me doctors were doing that now but I never had a reason to look into it.

9. They didn't say anything about doing that.
I need to take him back to the ER tomorrow for a recheck, and they will be able to determine more then regarding their next plan of attack.

16. I looked up the treatments and they sound promising:
He shouldn't be forced to pass it if there's no reason to IMO. This article describes the different ways of getting the stones out. If he has to go back tomorrow, it wouldn't hurt to ask about his options.

http://mens-health.health-cares.net/kidney-stones-treatment.php

Ureteroscopy. For stones in the lower tract, ureteroscopy is generally the best procedure although lithotripsy is also usually feasible and patients ordinarily prefer it. Ureteroscopy may be used for mid- and lower ureter stones. No incision is made in this procedure, but general anesthetic is still required. The surgeon passes a small fiberoptic instrument called a ureteroscope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. The surgeon then locates the stone or stones. Smaller ones are grasped and removed with tiny forceps. Large ones are shattered with lasers or pneumatic drill-like devices. A small tube, or stent, may be left in the ureter for a few days after treatment to help the lining of the ureter heal.

20. omg.

That sounds ... horrible. I guess if you're knocked out, not so much, but... :scared:

Not sure how he'd react to the idea of having that done. *I* would be freaking out at the thought, and you know men are much, MUCH more sensitive about their naughty bits. :)

Good info, and THANKS. I'll be sure to check that out and we will ask about it tomorrow.

37. considering the alternative....
Edited on Tue May-29-07 07:22 PM by GloriaSmith
It sounds horrible because, well let's face it, the urethra should ALWAYS be a one way street but the treatment described will be much easier on the urethra than a jagged stone forcing its way through. Whatever causes the least amount of damage is worth it.
:(

Also keep in mind this was a very quick google search so there may be better treatments out there. I recommend writing down every question you can think of to ask the doctor tomorrow and since he's high as a kite right now, he'll need you to be his advocate.

On edit: I re-read my post after posting it and I'm afraid I come across as patronizing. Please don't take it that way, that was not how I meant to sound.

On par with childbirth, and all that.

He's pretty miserable, although after two ginormous shots in the butt early this morning he felt a LOT better for awhile. I am taking my 18 year old (a girl I've "taken on", so to speak) to visit him on June 6th for a week. Perhaps he'll be flying back with us. :)

I've been there...it hurts like HELL.

Tell him to drink lots and lots of water. Like, until he nearly feels sick. Unless it's too big, the only way to get it out is to pee...a lot. If it still hasn't passed when you take him back to the doctor, you might ask if they'd be willing to admit him long enough to hook him up to an IV. I had a stone that just wouldn't pass, but an IV turned to mega-drip did the trick. ;)

21. Thanks!

I will definitely keep him well supplied w/ water. I set him up w/ my laptop in the bedroom, and he's got tv so he shouldn't have to move around much. I also have some HUGE water bottles that I will have to be sure to fill up for him and leave next to the bed.

I'm sorry you had to go through that too! He was soooo sick. :( It didn't look fun from my perspective at all, and I didn't have to suffer through it.

15. Here's a song for him...
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling kidney stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling kidney stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling kidney stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling kidney stone?

17. Good Vibage from the Matcoms!
Ask the doctors if they can use the sonic/sound/ultra sound/radar waves to break it up into little bits. A friend of mine suffers from them regularly and the blast him with, what ever the hell it is, to make the stones smaller so they will pass with out as much pain. If they won't do that tell them he needs MORPHINE! Christ I gave birth to a 8 1/2 pound boy with no anesthesia and it hurt like a mother...can imagine what poor GOP is going through. 30. hehe ....

Yeah, it is very difficult knowing there is nothing you can do.

I suppose this isn't the place to confess I was annoyed as hell because he was interfering w/ my sleep last night, is it? LOL In my defense, I was sooooooooo tired and I didn't really MEAN it. All I knew for awhile was that every time I'd start to doze off I'd be jerked awake - and that was about as far as my consciousness took me. Me + sleep depravation = pretty nasty combination. :)

I feel so bad that he has to deal with this, and I really wish there were something I could do to make it better. :(

One of the many wonderful things about David is that he knows me, and he knows I mean him no harm and that I care deeply about his well-being. He also knows I SUCK as a morning person and I am not very chipper when I'm overly tired. I love so much that he knows and understands me well enough to not take it personal. He is an amazing man. :loveya:

Yeah, I know David does not take it personally, and better yet he has a great sense of humor. Just this morning before I left for work he apologized (I am EXHAUSTED and had to go to work!!) for everything and I told him he's a LOOOOOOOOOSER (kind of a twisted term of endearment around here). After he apologized again I told him I was just kidding, I'm not mad at all and I know it wasn't his fault - I was just hurting him emotionally so he didn't feel the physical pain quite so strongly. :D

Yes, he did laugh!

I think it was just being around exciting new allergens that got the inflammation started, and it was all downhill from there. Hopefully we're going to get to see each other a bit more often from now on, hopefully without too much more medical drama but I think I'll make him bring all his allergy meds out here anyhow since he's even worse than me in that department.

I know that GOPisEvil is in a world of pain. I have suffered kidney stones for 20 years, so I am well-versed in their effects and treatments. I've had 4 lithotrypsies, and passed about 12 stones bigger than a pencil eraser (ouch!). The most painful part is when the stone travels from the kidney to the bladder, through the ureter. Once the stone has reached the bladder, the body reacts as if it has an infection: fever, discomfort, slight nausea. This phase can last from a few hours to a few days. Then, without warning, he will feel an incredible urge to urinate - the stone is ready to be released! At this point, my only advice is to shut your eyes and push hard. The harder he pushes, the sooner it is over. If all goes well, he will hear the "ping" as the stone hits the bowl, and he will heave a sigh of relief.

Kidney stones - nasty business. But as they say, "This too shall pass."

Good luck, GOPisEvil!

60. Thanks SO much for that.

Having a general idea of what to expect will be most helpful! I will share this with him as soon as I get home! :hi:

63. PS
Remind him to keep drinking lots of water, ever after he is out of pain. DO NOT stop drinking water until the stone has finally passed. My father and I have both experienced the trauma of a stone only making half way to the outside (ie, lodged in the penis itself). Make sure he has plenty of water to push the stone all the way out!

I had no idea how fragile he was. :-(

The things I require:

3. Water.
4. Percocet.
5. A stone that passes QUICKLY!

How's that? :*

79. Don't be scared
Seriously, dude, the worst part is what you're going through right now. And percocet, dayum! I have always found that percocet makes me really sick to my stomach, but I've also found that if one takes an herbal supplement :smoke: beforehand, the nausea isn't quite so bad. In fact, the herbal supplement is often enough to take the edge off. When you start to get the chills and a cold sweat, the pain is pretty much over. As I said before, this stage can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, just keep drinking lots of water. And by lots, I mean a quart at a time, if you can stomach it.

At some point soon, you will feel an INCREDIBLE urge to pee, and I mean RIGHT NOW! Brace yourself, it's really not that bad, but it will sting for about 1/2 second or so (probably less, if you push really hard). Then it's all over, whew.

Best of luck to you, and welcome to the kidney stone club!

Pied Piper

My urologist told me that unless my urine runs clear, I'm not drinking enough water. Just thought I'd pass that along to hopefully prevent any future episodes!

Percoset, um, slows you down, so water is good, but if you can eat plenty of fiber that's good too. Don't want any more, blockages if you know what I'm saying. Again, I hope you feel better. :)

I've only taken one does of percocet. Right now the ibuprofen is keeping the edge down. Honestly, I don't feel THAT bad.

Madrone is off buying me some ice cream. There's fiber in that, right? :D
