I did a stupid thing and I'm feeling quite foolish and ashamed
I ran my first marathon! but I had to drop out after 22 miles when my feet gave out. The reason I had such trouble with my feet blistering was that for some reason( still not sure what possessed me to do it)I chose to wear brand new, never been washed socks. Its something I had NEVER done before(red flag there stupid), Pulled pair out of the wrapper and slipped them on before setting out on a long run.My feet Will recover, but my ego will not.

It was stupid rookie mistake and I am quite ashamed of my self for making it.

so for the kids out there: DO NOT WEAR BRAND NEW SOCKS WHEN MARATHON.

Sincerely yours, (not feeling very) Cleveramerican

1. Running 22 miles is pretty impressive...
and you did the wise thing by dropping out and not doing any further damage to your feet.

3. I want to tweak your warning a bit: NEVER DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT BEFORE A RACE
Never wear new clothing, use new equipment, try new fuel, eat a different type of breakfast. Do EVERYTHING the same.

DRopping out with only four miles must be heartbreaking!

5. Oh....that's too bad...
...so close to the end, too.

My younger sister ran cross country track, in h.s. She told me a lot of crazy stories of mistakes runners would make. One of her teammates used a pumice stone on her feet the morning of a long distance race and, then, couldn't finish the race because her feet became so tender. Another story revolved around too many pancakes the morning of a race (they used to carb-up quite a bit!).

Hope your blisters heal quickly...and, your ego should not be bruised at all-- you ran quite a distance!!

9. Is the "stupid thing" the marathon, or the new socks?
Congratulations on going that far! At least now you know you can do it, and you know what to do differently (i.e., not do differently) to finish next time.

Compared to wearing the wrong socks for a run - I've done at least 5 stupider things in the last half hour, and I'm not even out of bed...

10. thank you all for the encouragement
I do feel good about the 22 miles I completed.
I feel foolish and ashamed about ten seconds of inattention to detail ruining nearly two years of training.I should have known better.

I can tell you from the bottoms of my very sore feet I will never make that mistake again.

Thank you all for your kind words

13. I am still VERY impressed by your effort
I'm sure you worked very hard to train for that. Even if I were in shape, I know I could never do what you did. Next time you'll know and will be able to finish it. :yourock:

14. WOW!
22 miles - I am certainly impressed! The furthest I've ever run (a million yrs. ago) was 9 miles.
I know the last 4 will eat at you for a while - but you will redeem yourself (although you don't really need to) in the next marathon that you enter.
Kudos to you!!
