Any heavy metal fans in the Lounge?
I love metal, but I don't wanna find a music forum so I'm trolling the lounge for any fellow metalheads.

What are some of your favorite bands/styles? Any new records you're really digging?

1. hell yeah
I have a pretty eclectic range in music (my playlist right now includes Tom Petty, RATM, Ministry, and Saint-Saens), but I'm at heart a metalhead. I really like In Flames (fantastic live, great audience connection), Sepultura, Soulfly, that kind of thing. I also like Ministry, Fear Factory, Static-X, the speed metal/industrial stuff. And the standbys Slayer and Pantera, of course.

Then I also like prog metal like Dream Theater, the old stuff like Dio, Judas Priest, and Megadeth. Pretty much anything metal, as long as you can vaguely understand what they're singing/screaming. I'm not into Mastodon, Cannibal Corpse, or stuff like that; getting a cold and grunting really loud doesn't do it for me (though I really want to like Mastodon, cause their instrumentals kick ass).

As to new records, it's been a while, but I happened to get Static-X's "Cannibal" the other day; pretty brutal, a nice return to Wisconsin Death Trip days.

2. I saw In Flames at Sounds of the Underground last year
They did kick ass. I have their latest album and I should probably check out their older stuff eventually.

Do you like Neurosis? I have "Times of Grace" and it's a thoroughly badass album. I don't have their new one yet, though I'm sure I'll pick it up soon.

I actually got to meet Cannibal Corpse, lol. They're really great guys - smart and super-nice. I can only listen to their stuff when I'm in the mood for mind-numbing, soul-crushing brutality, though. I really like the instrumental part of "March of the Fire Ants" by Mastodon but I know what you mean - it'd almost work better as an instrumental.

I admit to being a big geek and really liking all the Viking/fantasy metal scene, too - Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Nightwish, etc. Makes me want to pick up an axe and pillage things.

Also, I really like your avatar. It's inexplicably cute. :D

I discovered them through Anthony's misc mp3 folder. Where all the misc stuff other people downloaded that he doesn't like goes. So my buddy went out and got me some full albums. :loveya:

I think I prefer Therion over Nightwish, though, to be honest. I'll have to introduce you to Opeth if you haven't listened to them yet.

Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas

A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming

Crowning of Atlantis

Secret of the Runes

Sirius B (2004)

Lemuria

I own everything they have put out and those are my favorite. The last two I still play at night right before bed. The music is almost trancing yet hypnotic in a metal sort of way. ^.^

7. I like that Tool is willing to take bands on tour with them that will challenge their audience.
This year Melt Banana is hooking up with them off and on through the summer, and they are NOTHING like Tool.I can only imagine how they'll go over, though I think MB are the coolest thing since sliced bread. They've also taken Isis out with them (in fact, one of the members of Tool said he wished they could take Isis with them on every tour).

Not many bands are willing to take the chance of alienating their own crowd by having such different bands tour with them.

Here's Melt Banana...you'll hear just how different they are,and why I'm so curious to see how Tool fans respond.

8. Less into metal, more into flat out fucked.
Ministry is one of my faves, but I'm getting more into the Black Metal stuff (Leviathan can do NO wrong) the last couple of years.People like Xasthur,Craft,Nachmystium.I simply cannot listen to anything that borders on metalcore. If I hear one more insipid, boring, uninspired breakdown I'm going to puke.Bands like Chimeria,Throwdown....can't handle it.They all need to listen to any CD by Clutch.

I'm very big on Neurosis (the one song I've heard off the new CD is a headcrusher),the Melvins,Nomeansno (my all time fave).

As for oldies,I still think the three album run by Voivod (Killing Technology,Dimension Hatross, and Nothingface) are some of the best and most progressive metal ever put out.Early Sepultura,Vio-lence,Wargasm,Testament,Exodus...you name them,we listened to them.Municipal Waste captures that Nuclear Assualt sound to perfection, better than the last Nuclear Assault did.I can still dig the first two Megadeth CDs,along with early Metallica.Lesser known bands like Heathen,Sodom,Kreator and Destruction were all good.Blind Illusion (with Les Claypool and Larry Lalonde, who was also in Possessed) was a cool CD.

Let's see....I like Prong to this day (it doesn't hurt knowing that Tommy Victor is part of Ministry, and Ted Parsons has worked with The Swans, two great bands).Opeth is pretty damn good at times, though they get a little fancy for my tastes here and there. When they're on (Baying of the Hounds from Ghost Reveries,or the entire Deliverance CD,for instance) they are excellent.

Motorhead is still a classic.Iron Maiden up to Powerslave,Priest up to Defenders of the Faith.Hell,we even had Saxon albums!

Now I'm more into total all out stuff like Anaal Nathrakh,Cannibal Corpse (Hate Eternal is even better ,imo, and Erik Rutan from H.E. produced the newest Cannibal Corpse CD "KILL"),Napalm Death,Immolation (never great but always solid).

I could go on forever on this topic,so I'll quit here. :D

23. Love Neurosis and Opeth
I really, really love Opeth's sound but I can't listen to them that often because their songs are so dense and long - it's not really casual listening stuff, ya know?

I like some old school black metal - well, if you call stuff like Emperor and Immortal old school. I just read an article in Decibel about Dimmu Borgir and the split between so-called "mainstream black metal" like Dimmu and Cradle of Filth and "underground" black metal like Watain and Nachtmystium. It was pretty interesting... I don't think I'd call Dimmu straight up black metal but I am digging their new single.

Edited on Mon May-28-07 05:22 AM by Forkboy
I've been letting that pummel me around for the last few weeks.Surprised I didn't even mention Emperor,I play them frequently.Totally agree about Opeth. They can be so awesome, but you really need to be ready to devote all your attention to them. The payoff is there though when you do.

I'm pretty mixed on both Dimmu and Cradle.I like some of the new Cradle songs.Good sound and well structered, but still lacking that certain "it" factor for me.One my friends is heavily (no pun intended) into them both.I don't consider them so much Black Metal.Extreme maybe, but not quite crusty enough or something.Of course,I don't buy into that kult thing with Black Metal,so if those bands want to call themselves Black Metal who am I to argue? :)

Neurosis has one of their new songs up here:

Have you heard Dimmu's new song? The Serpentine Offering http://www.myspace.com/dimmuborgir I like it quite a bit, but yeah, it's not really black metal, kult or otherwise, haha. I guess some people think that mentioning Satan = black metal. He even sings, so definitely not very high on the crustiness factor.

Love Motorhead, Judas Priest of course and probably my all time favorite real ass metal band, Mercyful Fate - Don't break the Oath then its Slayer. Love Soulfly and American Headcharge too. Of course Sabbath and Zeppelin are timeless. Did you ever hear Cirith Ungol? They have that kind of classic metal sound and formed sometime in the 70s, but never made it big. They had 4 records spaced throughout the 80s that never caught on and eventually broke up, but I really love their sound and it's a shame they never made it big like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden or other 80s metal bands.

In an interview, Araya believes that "...Christ came and taught us about love, about doing unto others. That was his preach: Accept each other for who we are. Live peacefully, and love one another." When asked if he believed in God, replied "I believe in a supreme being, yeah. But He's an all-loving God."<9> Araya explained that he has a "really strong belief system," and Slayer's words and images will "never interfere with what I believe and how I feel.... People are not in good shape to where they have to question their own belief system because of a book or a story somebody wrote, or a Slayer song.

And to be honest, after hearing Christ Illusion, which is so Slayer by numbers, that I don't care to see them in Hell.I'll just bring my own copy of Reign In Blood with me. :)

Never thought I'd say this, but Lombardo is wasted in Slayer at this point.I'd much rather hear him back in Fantomas, but that's just me.

On the other hand...Sabbath will definitely be playing gigs in Hell. :D

20. Been a metalhead since back in the day
I remember it fondly, buying my first Iron Maiden album "Numer of the Beast" in 1984. I became obsessed...mowed lawns and bought a bass. I played in metal bands all throughout my teens and 20's, ranging from old school Rush and Iron Maiden to death metal like Coroner and Death. I've had the hair, the dress, everything at one time, but I look fairly nerdy, now.

I have met the guys in Pantera....actually, I grew up in the area where they are from. We all took Darrel's death really badly.

I still listen to all of my metal. Iron Maiden is always a mainstay, as is Slayer. I listen to a lot of esoteric early thrash and death metal (like Coroner, Destruction, Sodom, Kreator, Death Angel, etc.), but I also like some of the new stuff, especially melodic death metal. I suppose Arch Enemy is my favorite "newer" band, but also dig on Lamb of God and some of Cannibal Corpse. Check out Necrophagist if you like progressive and brutal metal...those guys are off the hook!

I honestly believe that heavy metal changed my life. I will ALWAYS be a metalhead, and I will always carry that attitude with me....a free spirit with a penchant for hedonism and and rebellious streak a mile wide.

I saw them with Mastodon opening a few years back, and both bands just ripped the joint a new asshole. If you can see them DO IT!

Matt Pike also sings on the CD from Kalas, which is more like Pike's old band Sleep than H.O.F.

According to my Resound mag from Relapse Records High On Fire are in the studio right now working on the new one.

47. I've seen them 8 times.
Nearly every time they've come to Cleveland, I've been there. HOF is one of the loudest bands you'll ever see live, and Matt is so animated on stage, you'd think he should be blowing eardrums out at an arena show. Their sound is large.

39. Now THAT'S a list!
Edited on Mon May-28-07 05:48 AM by Forkboy
I didn't mention a lot of those, like Sunn 0))),Pelican and the like because I'm borderline on how "metal" they are (I don't mean that in a negative way).Seeing Sunn twice this last year (once with Xasthur on vocals) really blew me away.Their records don't do their live sets any justice.

Great to see Pestilence thrown in.I just found Consuming Impulse used on CD for 5 bucks a couple weeks ago and I've been hooked on it all over again (the TRAUMAAAAAAAA!).

Steve Austin from Today is the Day lives and records in the next town over from me.By all accounts he's a dick, and they sucked the one time I saw them, but Kiss The Pig was another good CD by them. The band 5ive opened for them, and they kicked ass. They're like a two man Pelican.

Is Keelhaul ever going to do another CD? I burnt the others out.Talk about addictive crunchy riffs. If you don't already know about them, the band Suzukiton sounds a lot like them.A lot of instrumental killer riffs.

Nice seeing the Young Gods and Pigface mentioned too.

And we all forgot Dark Angel!!!! :spank:

48. Any band that has Greg Anderson, Steve O'Malley and 9 full stacks = metal.
Keelhaul is on hiatus for a bit. Dallison (the bassist/vocalist) is in like 3 other bands in Cleveland and the other members have projects.

Everyone should see Sunn O))))) once in their lives. It's a religion of volume.

Darkness Descends was awesome. Everything after that was OK, I guess. I wasn't a fan of Ron Reinhart's vocals.

43. Let's not forget the satanic bluegrass heavy metal of HOGSCRAPER!
Named for the guy or gal in the slaughterhouse who gets to scrape the meat from the hog's bone.

It's Gwar meets Bill Monroe:

44. I just went and checked out their Myspace page.
Different stuff. The first song,Death Dance Polka, reminds me a lot of the silly side of Nomeansno (in a good way),and the other stuff is like a light hearted 16 Horsepower mixed with Southern Culture On The Skids.

I kinda liked that...thanks for tossing it out there!

45. I saw them open up for Mojo Nixon
at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton. Must have been 15 years ago. Hogscraper came out with a drummer, a banjo player, and this total freak who plays the washtub bass and screeched in such an offensive manner that I didn't know if I could make it through the set.

But it was also brilliant, so I stayed, and became a fan. They are huge in the Southern Ohio area. They just recently regrouped. I can't wait to go see a Hogscraper show. Hope they play in Cincy this year.

And also, as a musician myself, THANK YOU for being willing to check out stuff that corporate America says you shouldn't!

50. I don't do a lot of metal, but...
I do listen to a lot of Pantera & Tool. Suicidal Tendencies did an album I listen to a lot- Lights...Camera...Revolution!

I recently got into Nightwish and Therion so I'm really diggin Symphonic metal these days. I bought Therion's 'Celebrators of Becoming' and fell in freaking love. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebrators_of_Becoming

Into some progressive metal, too, like Opeth. I don't really enjoy thrash and speed and black and all that, but that doesn't mean I won't listen to it.

Mainly though, I'm a grunge/90's alt girl.

54. Nightwish, Nightwish, Nightwish, Nightwish...
NIGHTWISH!!! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I absolutely LOVE the song "Ghost Love Score"; have to listen to it at least once a day...sometimes more! :D A (former) co-worker recently turned me onto them, since I'm a fan of Evanescence and Lacuna Coil, he told me to check Nightwish out. As a former voice student, I love trying to sing along...I really need to practice more though, ha!

I suppose most of the bands I listen to could be classified as Hard Rock... The above mentioned bands, Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, 3 Days Grace, Avenged Sevenfold, The Exies, Stone Sour, Chevelle, Hurt, and so on... :headbang:

Sarah's Current Song: "Ghost Love Score" (surprised? LOL)

Anything by Opeth is excellent, and Mastodon's "Remission" and "Leviathan" albums are pretty solid. "Blood Mountain" sucks, though.

Try some of the Euro bands: Gallowglass isn't bad, Human Fortress is good, and Iron Savior is flat-out fucking excellent.

If you hadn't mentioned already being a Blind Guardian fan I'd have added them to the list.

62. Metal head checking in...
Although, I haven't gotten into any new/recent bands. I have a hard time keeping up with new metal/rock music, so I usually just stay with what I know, aka if Metallica/Korn, or someone I like puts out another cd, I usually get it....

My favorite metal band is Metallica...hard riffs, guitar solo's, a daunting/pissed off vocal lead....:) My top 15 metal bands are as follows, and they are not in any order persay...

1. Metallica

2. AC/DC

3. Life of Agony

4. DIO

5. Iron Maiden(most of it!)

6. Korn(although a lot of their recent stuff blows)

7. Mudvayne

8. Life of Agony(I love all of their cds...haunting vocals, and amazing lyrics)

9. Rob Zombie/White Zombie...hard, fast music...

10. Ozzy

11. ILL Nino-hard music, great lyrics/vocals...

12. Type O Negative-much like Life of Agony, great vocals, and the lyrics are powerful/humorous most of the time...

13. Slipknot-for the angry pissed off demon, that lives within my rib cage...

14. Fear Factory-hard, fast, amazing drums, and vocals...the lyrics are very angry/powerful....

15. Soul Fly/Seplutura-hard fast drums/guitar, angry/strong vocals....:)

I prefer Megadeth but will not buy their latest album. My favorite Metallica is S&M. Almost any Scorpions is good to listen too. Def Leppard also mixes it up.

66. Apparently Dave Mustaine is a huge fundie now?
I read an interview with him in Decibel... he won't play onstage with bands who use Satanic or anti-religious imagery. When the interviewer tried to suggest to him that those other bands just use the Satan stuff for camp value and that they're not actually satanists, he replied, "That's what they want you to think."

Oooookay...

71. Kyuss, Celtic Frost, Sabbath.
I'm a metalhead from WAY back. I used to spend hours and hours listening to heavy metal on college radio stations in Cleveland while doing groundskeeping (at a cemetery, no less!) I could fall asleep listening to death metal while wearing headphones. (I think the constant drone of double kick drums would lull me to sleep.) The groups I liked were Venom, the first Exodus record, early Metallica (I've got Cliff's autograph!), Iron Maiden (First concert was Piece of Mind tour, 1983), Black Sabbath (Tony Iomii was my hero), Anthrax (before they got silly), Slayer, Megadeth, Trouble (LOVED Trouble), Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, Sanctuary, Tool. I also got into a lot of the industrial type stuff; Godflesh (My avatar), ICE, Skinny Puppy, and Ministry.

I don't listen to much new stuff. I'm kinda out of the loop. Instead, I'll throw on Blues for the Red Sun by Kyuss, or Spine of God by Monster Magnet and play them exceedingly loud.
