I was just scared half to death
On the verge of sleep I heard a noise that sounded like someone trying to break in. I am guess it was my neighbors coming home drunk or something but it really terrified me so I grabbed the phone and a baseball bat. I am not sure either would have helped. Now I guess I won't get to sleep for a while.

1. Didn't you just have a break in recently?
I wouldn't blame you, I'd be scared too.

Can you wedge a piece of wood in your windows, to keep them from being slid open?

I haven't known of anything to happen at night. But I am probably a little jumpy still.

2. That's happened to me before.
I heard voices in my backyard, called 911, sat on my bed and waited, heart thumping out of my chest. Cops showed up about 20 mins. later and didn't find anything; they were long gone, whoever it was. Very scary...I know what you're going through.

4. And my cat did absolutely nothing of course
Not much of an attack cat. In fact he runs and hides when anyone comes it. He was probably a witness to the break-in but he is not talking. LOL

8. If it was my house
one cat would have probably helped them, the other would have hidden under the bed.

7. I had a similar thing once.
It was in the morning when I was getting ready for work - could hear someone in the basement rummaging around. Scary as hell. And I was a single mom, didn't have any personal days for a full year because even though I was working as a civilian for the army, they made me use ALL my personal days for my 2 weeks reserve training, but that's a different rant. Anyway, had to get to work.

I had a wtf I cannot deal with this now moment, so I dragged all the furniture in the living room against the basement door, figured the burglar could wait there til I got home. Sucks to be a criminal in my house, cause sometimes I am too damn busy to deal with other people's shit on their timetable.

Drove to work and did my thing there. Drove home 10 hours later, called a neighbor, moved the couch and table and all that. I had no plan, probably should have called the cops to handle it, but I headed down cautiously to see what sort of asshole had been stuck in my house for the last 10 hours.

Turned out my hamster had escaped, went for a stroll to the basement, and decided to climb on a pile of empty boxes - knocking them all over in a huge noise fest. Gah!

10. Noises always seem more alarming to me at night
I keep things pretty dark normally but I am thinking maybe a night light tonight.

My cat will sometimes knock things over, also scaring me half to death but this time he was innocent.

11. Cats are NEVER innocent.
Could have been someone else's cat.

I wouldn't worry too much, but if it makes you feel safer, I'd either put all the lights on as a deterrent or skip the nightlight, cause you know your own home better than anyone else - in the dark you have an advantage. The nightlight would just let them get around easier.

Wasn't there some movie where the potential victim kept using a camera to blind their attacker with the flash? That appeals to my macgyver side.
