Best bed for people with back problems?
I often toss and turn at night because I seem to pinch nerves that renders my arm, hands, and/or fingers paralyzed.

1. get a tempur-pedic bed
check out their website, or hit up www.healthyback.com and look at their mattress section.

9. That's what we have
my husband got hit by a car several years ago and has a pain pump for his back pain. After getting use to the bed, we haven't had back pain getting up in the am for a year now. Might want to look into it.

2. floor
but not nitely. Just every so often as you can take it.

apparantly, the flat hard surface allows the discs to align/straighten/relax, i guess the last one is relative.

worked for me before i had 2 discectomies, and have still had to hunker down on the floor a few times since.

have you had your back looked at by a professional?

3. Had a discectomy once...
given the serious degeneration of the disc above it, it's probably inevitable I'll need another at some point.

Thx for the advice. I will try that tonight.

4. then let me allow a few pointers
that work for me. Take a blankie or two that you want to lay upon. I didn't mean it to be hard on you.
I use 4 or 5 pillows of varying thickness. One thin one under my head, a thicker under my ankles to elevate them somewhat. Others thicker around me to keep me on my back and not turn over to side, etc. Around my sides, or shoulders, hips whatever to keep you on your back.

if you have a really thin one you might try it under your butt, but the blankets actually allow enough padding for me.

now, you may wake up with a sore spot or so from a hard floor, but your back hopefully will have decompressed the discs by being straightened, or at least that's my theory. It works for me.

sweet dreams.

6. one night I slept on an air bed and now I have one
Seriously, it was like sleeping on a cloud and I woke with no aches or pains anywhere. Now I have one. It's just one of those queen size Coleman mattresses that I put over my queen size futon. Less than twenty bucks, and if kitty-cat makes a leak in it I just get another one. I won't ever have anything else. I never knew there could be such comfort.

7. My chiro suggest the air beds
One other thing, meantime, that provides so much comfort is using a body pillow. You can tuck it next to you so that you can lean on it. I just use a regular pillow. When I lay on my side, it's behind me and at my back.

I first used it after gall bladder surgery. I needed a little extra support so I wouldn't be able to move so much. And putting a pillow next to me to use for leaning on worked just great. Better than my husband even since he wouldn't stay in one place!

8. JFK slept on a board
But you can probably do better than that these days. We have a Sleep-Comfort adjustable bed and love it - it's exceptionally comfortable.

10. We have a knockoff of a Select Comfort bed
I like it a lot because at different times, my body seems to need different levels of firmness. Our remote for the airpump does not have the numbers on it so I could not tell you what my sleep number range is, but damn, this bed is the best thing since the wheel.

11. I love my latex foam mattress
It's like Tempur-pedic, but it is not slow release foam. It has full support, but is like sleeping on a cloud.

12. I slept on a memory foam mattress
for a couple months and had no back problems. Now that I'm sleeping on a regular mattress, my back problems are back. Memory foam is the way to go.

13. On the carpeted floor with a couple of quilts.
I used to sleep on the carpeted floor with a couple of quilts under me, and sheets and blankets and pillows like a regular bed, when I was a kid, at my grandma's house.

She got quite angry at me for not sleeping on her soft beds but that was tough shit. I told her "doctor's orders" and got her to shut up.

Right now I have a king size bed that used to be firm but it's old. I got a 3 inch thick memory foam slab to put on it and 2 memory foam pillows, to help it. I got them at overstock.com. It helps a lot. I like the way the pillows are thicker and rounded on the edges for more neck support.

15. what else to do for a pinched nerve
I seem to pinch nerves that renders my arm, hands, and/or fingers paralyzed.

If this is happening, you need to do something else in addition to getting a good mattress. I concur with the poster upthread who suggests getting your back checked out. What it might be is that you have overstressed certain areas of the spine, such as when you do too much computer work or some other type of repetitive stress motion.

Occasionally this happens to me and I used to go to a chiro for it but he trained me in certain stretch exercises. Now if I do these back stretches, this alleviates it (if it shows up--but if I do the stretches regularly, it rarely ever happens).

PM me if you want info on where to find the right stretches for this situation.
