I always try to get a child to understand what these special holidays are about. This one is for the fallen soldiers, and I thank them all for their ultimate sacrifice.

16. In memory of the fallen...

Fading light dims the sight
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky
All is well, safely rest;
God is nigh.

Then goodnight, peaceful night;
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright.
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, goodnight.

22. Get out the Kleenex.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
'Twas Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.

I salute all of our men and women serving now or who have in the past.

on a family note, I salute the following:

Dad: US Army, 1955-1959

Uncle Roy, Veteran of the Korean War (Quartermaster, a remf as he would always point out to me...)

Uncle Alfred: US Marines, WWII, survived Battaan Death march and 42 months as a POW.

Uncle Artie: US Naval Intelligence, WWII.

36. Memorial day is for those who DIED not served
Edited on Sat May-26-07 05:51 PM by nini
sorry to piss on your well-intentioned parade but this is one of my pet peeves regarding this holiday. We honor those who paid the ultimate price in service of our country.

On November 11th we honor all those who have served.

My dad would spin in his grave if I put a flag at his grave this weekend as both my parents taught me the significance of this day at an early age. I will proudly put a flag on his grave on Veterans' day to honor him for his sacrifice in WWII.
