Do we most enjoy the music that we listened to when we were teenagers?
Confession: I'm dating this old hippy guy :D and last night we were hanging out at his place listening to Clapton and early Jackson Browne. It was fun... and I certainly enjoyed it... but I didn't have anywhere near the wealth of emotional associations he did with it (of course) and it made me wonder -- is it the stuff we grow up with that we always love the most or react to the most? I'm not sure -- I'm certainly still very fond of Siouxie, PIL, and all the other bands that my little alterna-girl heart enjoyed back in the day -- but there are bands around today that I react to with equal intensity, or at least I think so. Thoughts?

1. That's the case with me.
My car radio is tuned to a station that mostly plays the "Oldies but Goodies". And I have several CD's for the 70's.

2. Depends on the musci I think
in my case, I was a big Kiss fan growing up and I have grown out of them (although I enjoy hearing them occasionally on the radio). Otehr music (Stones, Queen, ect) I have that strong emotional attachment to.

3. For me it was my early 20s
I was old enough to get into bars and young enough to be able to stay out late and appreciate bands. I used to have a life-changing experience at a club about once a week. Now I only go out a few times a year and rarely see anything that genuinely impresses me.

When LynnSin posted a thread asking for new band suggestions I realized that there were no new bands I liked. I'm sure they're out there, I'm just not as inclined as I used to be to seek them out.

4. Sure, when you're a teenager you're defining yourself
and the music is a big part of the definition.

6. Not at all. I don't listen to any of the same music anymore.
I listened to only classic rock when I was a teen. I don't think I really knew about any other kind of music.

Now I listen to a lot of country, folk, blues, alternative, R&B, pop, dance, trance, etc.

7. Not for me.
I've got some favorites from that time, but I find a lot of that stuff (70s for me) way too stale. I can't STAND 'classic rock' playlists.

While not on the edge of the musical cutting edge, I am constantly finding newer artists that I really like.

8. I think a lot of people do
And I think maybe as we get older, it carries more emotional weight because it reminds us of our youth. I think I listen to more of the stuff from my teenage years now than I did ten years ago and I think it's probably because I'm in my 40's, my kids are grown and the music carries me back to some really nice places.

11. That might be true for some but not for me
I LOATHE the music I liked in high school. I recognize it now for the crap it was, now that I have heard what real music and real musicians should sound like. Some of the stuff I hated in high school (the new wave stuff mostly) I actually like better now for some reason. Some sounds dated with all the electronic effects, which turn me off.

12. It's a sign of perpetual adolescence
I couldn't imagine listening to some of the scat I did as a teen. Some I still do though. Greatness defies time.

14. I believe so. MOST of us, anyway. I know I do.
Sure, there are still some bands that come along
and really make me like them...but the older I get,
the fewer and further between they seem.

I can only think of a few I've come to love since
my teen years: Nirvana, Green Day, The Red Elvises, Polysics...

I think a big part of it is that, as we get older, we start
to realize that very little in music is truly "new".
The same things get recycled, re-mixed, adopted and adapted
ad infinitum.

We hear the latest band and say, "So-and-so did that 20 years ago".
But as we get older yet, hopefully we also realize: it's ALWAYS been
that way.

Somewhere 40 thousand years ago, some caveman was wowing a crowd
by beating a hollow log with a big bone...and there was some older
caveman in the crowd telling anyone who would listen:
"This crap. Og son of Ag beat log same way when I was just caveboy. Did it better."

16. Yes
Which is why the best music is all from the 60s while the world is run by Boomers; in the future the best music will be from the 80s probably, and always inching forward as people grow up into positions of authority,

17. I can still hear FWM Rumors or the Grateful Dead
I got my first hand me down stereo from my older sister and Rumors sounded great on that old thing.
I bought that Johnny Horton,Europe 72, The Kids are All Right. My sister would play flute to Tull and I would steal the Beatles 45's along with Lovin Spoonful from her. she is the one that took me to my first dead show at 8 years old. "Just don't tell mom"
Just thinking about it,
I go right back to the way I felt when I was listening. I bought Jackson Brown, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens etc. Happy kid days for sure especially since I had a serious ear problem back in the day and was deaf for at least 4-5 months until the figured out what was wrong.

19. Well, sort of. I guess...
...I mean, in my early teens, I listened to Ratt, Motley Crue, Autograph, Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, etc. Then, in 8th grade, I dated this girl who was gaga over Adam Ant and Duran Duran, so I started listening to them, and it turned me on to a whole new scene. I still hear "Cum on feel the noize" ever so often, and get a nostalgic smile. But I also still listen to Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, INXS, etc. Karen Bishop was her name. I wonder what my music tastes would be had I not choked down her music just to date her. At the time, I hated it. But, as often happens, it grew on me.

20. I actively sought out good music in my teen years, sick of the shit on radio.
And yes, I still listen to the music of my teen years. Turns out I had damned good taste back then.

I learned the difference between good music and pop in my elementary years.
