Tell me about a new band whose music I should check-out!!
Friday night I went with a friend to see Son Volt in concert. Now I'm under the belief that opening bands in general are suppose to be pretty sucky and usually can be ignored.

But there was a great opening band for Son Volt at this concert that it seemed everyone was digging their music. The group is "The High Strung" and it's a mix of the early Who meets the 21st century. I just downloaded their album "These are Good Times" and I plan to find the rest of them.

So tell me about a band you think I should checkout! I'm always looking for new great music!

1. I love Son Volt
Completely by accident I ran across this band called chris and thomas.
Can't find anything on youtube, but here's their myspace. They have a folk singer songwriter thing going on that I really like a lot.

Give them a taste.

2. Metallica.
There used to be a band called Metallica in the 80s, but they all died in a bus crash in 1990. Their manager finally managed to sell their name to some new guys.

7. Not a new artist, but a new record
Elliott Smith (RIP) just put out a new album of demo and outtake recordings called "New Moon". I downloaded it off eMusic last weekend, and it is quite impressive, even given the raw quality of the tunes. If you like acousticy alt-rock, it's well worth checking out.

John Doe (bass player for LA punk band X) supposedly has a new one coming out in the next month or two. His last one ("Forever Hasn't Happened Yet") was really good, and featured guest spots by Grant-Lee Phillips (Grant Lee Buffalo), Dave Alvin (Blasters, X), and Neko Case (New Pornographers), among others.

9. You're welcome
It took a couple weeks to pop up on eMusic, but it finally showed up. I've been on a bit of an ES kick lately so the timing is fortunate. :)

16. Report: Only Seven band names Remaining
NEW YORK—According to data released Monday by the International Registry of Rock Band Names, only seven of the estimated 518 million potential names for musical acts remain available.

"Following the selection of 'The Stripped Amygdaloids,' 'A Purple Spray Of Cloth Violets,' and 'Guestowel' this past weekend, it is essential that new bands pick a name as soon as possible," read a statement on the organization's website. "Bands that wish to form after all names have been taken will be have to wait until a name becomes available, which could take anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 years."

While a MySpace page was created late Monday under the title Whiteboard Ether, one of the few band names left, the IRRBN has not yet confirmed whether the group has actually played any gigs.

19. Manu Chao!!!!
Most of his songs are in French and Spanish, but I saw him the last night of Coachella, and even Rage Against The Machine had a hard time following his band!
