Dam it all...Bo Diddley suffers on-stage stroke, is in "guarded condition"
Stroke at concert sends Bo Diddley to hospital
POSTED: 9:24 p.m. EDT, May 16, 2007

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Bo Diddley is in intensive care after suffering a stroke in Iowa, a publicist said Wednesday.

The 78-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was listed in guarded condition at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, said Susan Clary, a publicist for the musician's management team.

Diddley, who has a history of hypertension and diabetes, was hospitalized Sunday following a concert in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in which he acted disoriented, she said.

Tests indicated the stroke affected the left side of his brain, impairing his speech and speech recognition, Clary said.

Clary said she has no other details on Diddley's condition or how long he would be in intensive care.

Diddley, with his black glasses and low-slung guitar, has been an icon in the music industry since he topped the R&B charts with "Bo Diddley" in 1955. His other hits include "Who Do You Love," "Before You Accuse Me," "Mona" and "I'm a Man."

2. The Beach Club, Myrtle Beach, SC. 1963. I danced with Bo onstage.
Now it can be told.
I was a lifeguard in Myrtle Beach for the summer of '63.
A bunch of us went to Bo's show at The Beach Club on July 5th.
We were drinking PJ.
Purple Jesus.
Grape juice and Everclear grain alcohol.

By the time Bo came on I was FLYIN'!
When he started into 'Hey, Bo Diddley' I hopped up on the stage and he and I did the bop or something for a few minutes.
He in his suit and me in my LIFEGUARD T shirt and Madras plaid shorts.
Way cool.

There was no security that I can remember.
Hey, who would want to hurt Bo?
The crowd went wild.

One of my fondest memories.
:-)

Bo Diddley's Beach Party, a blistering live album, especially in genuine mono (the re-channeled stereo is barely passable) -- and quite simply the finest live rock & roll album of its era, cut live by Diddley and band at Myrtle Beach, SC, on July 5 and 6, 1963.

I was 22 and having my last fling before reporting to USAF Pilot Training class in late August.

P.S. Thanks for letting me be your hero.

4. Sad news
I wish him the best. I think we will be seeing more and more of this from the early rockers.

16. Sure. Plenty to go around.
I haven't been anybody's hero since I quit flying.
Little kids were waaayyyy impressed with the uniform.
I've even had them come up to the cockpit for me to 'autograph' their boarding pass.

18. Aw man. That 'cigar box' guitar.

Bo's signature guitar

His trademark instrument is the rectangular-bodied Gretsch nicknamed "The Twang Machine" (although he has had other similar-shaped guitars made for him by other manufacturers) guitar that he developed and wielded in thousands of concerts over the years. In a 2005 interview on JJJ radio in Australia, Bo implied that the design was born from embarrassment. In an early gig, he was jumping around on stage with a Gibson L5 guitar, he landed awkwardly hurting his groin. He then went about designing a smaller, less restrictive guitar so he could keep jumping around.
