So, if the ATM eats your debit card
do they destroy it and you have to order a new one or do they send it back to you? I neglected take it out and put it back in before my second transaction and it sucked that card right up. Will they need to give me a whole new number? That would really suck to have to change all my auto-pay stuff online :( Why did it have to happen on a Sunday when I can't call the bank?

1. They do not do either.
They send the card back to your bank, and the bank destroys it. You must call your bank and order a new card.

I only know because my husband did this with our only card last Friday. Our bank is out of state, so we didn't get our card until this Friday. It was a horrible mess.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It totally sucks.

5. That's an idea
considering it's a Diebold machine. Well, the first time it happened it was a Diebold machine.

I refuse to use that machine ever. When I saw the name on it I walked away and drove to a different ATM.

Last week was the second time this has happened. Oy!

3. aww dammit
thanks for the info though. It was the ATM at my bank, I wonder if I call early in the morning if maybe they can take it out before destroying it.

4. It might be different since it's your bank's ATM
None of the ATMs we use belong to our bank. Hopefully, your bank will just give it back to you.

7. ATM of the home bank, they'll usually keep it.
Definitely call them in the morning. This lets them know that you are the reason it was kept, rather than some thief without a PIN.
In a small bank they may even bring it into the customer service area and call you about it.

15. If it's your bank, you can do that.
You can call and they will hold the card for you to pick up. The only problem is that the card is now inactive. They might be able to re-activate it. But I'm not sure.

8. You are screwn
They can never iron out the little ATM teeth marks once the machine eats your card.

9. Some banks insist on destroying the card, sorry
I've had that done, and I've gotten them back from the bank when I contacted them. Depends on the bank.

10. Call your bank's service center
Their 24 hour contact number should be printed on the back of your card. Oh, wait. Hmmm. Looks like you have a problem, pal.

12. they can get the bank's service center phone number online
banks do realize that if you are pickpocketed, mugged, dog/atm eats your card you don't have the phone number on the back of your card

however they do have 24 hour hotlines, best to look up the bank/card issuer in question online -- hell some have international hotlines in case the dog eats your homework in a foreign country

most want to know about such issues immediately and not wait until normal business hours

11. Don't use ATM machines
that actually suck your card into their innards. I like the cards where you just swipe the card through the reader.

Especially if I'm travelling.

13. Call the Bank
YMMV, but the ATM ate my card a couple months ago and all I had to do was go to the bank the next day to pick it up. Call the branch where the card was eaten first thing tomorrow because it might not be a big deal. GOOD LUCK!

I am SO relieved. I'm so glad I don't have to go through all the BS of redoing my account # all over the place.

Thanks to all who answered :-)

17. I don't understand
You can't do two transactions without taking the card out and putting it back in? I've never heard of such a thing. I do that with my debit card all the time. Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean. :dunce:

20. I was just guessing at the reason
It was after my first transaction and before the second but it popped out and then sucked right back in again. I'll have to ask what I did wrong when I pick up my card today. Maybe the ATM machine was just being cranky.

18. I've had that happen
and I got it out by trying to put a second card (ie my driver's licence) in the machine. The machine got so confused it spit my ATM card right back out. :P

19. Go to the bank on Monday and get it back. If your account wasn't overdrawn
they will give it back to you. If your account was overdrawn, they will destroy it. That is the only reason they would destroy it. :)

21. I actually had money in my account for a change
but I wanted to verify how much and oops! it sucked up the card before it gave me money. They already had it pulled with a note to call me when I called them this morning. Thank god.

23. We used to bank at a place with a quirky machine
Edited on Mon May-14-07 11:00 AM by SoCalDem
I would go there at 4AM and the damned machine would eat my card. the message on the screen said :
"For your safety and convenience, your card is being retained..please see the representative in the lobby".. :grr: how convenient, eh?

Then I would go after work and she had a ledger full of numbers and a stack of cards that the machine ate. You would have to show ID and they would give the card back..

needless to say, we no longer bank there :)

24. Do not say 'EAT' It's CAPTURE CAPTURE CAPTURE...
Edited on Mon May-14-07 01:41 PM by edbermac
Did a temp phone rep job for a big bank years ago and had that drilled into my head.

Do not say to the customer that their card has been 'eaten'. It's 'captured'.

If I heard that once, I heard it a hundred times.

:spank:

As to your question, I'm sure they destroy the card and then issue you a new one.
