Poll question: about train songs
Edited on Fri May-11-07 10:46 AM by wildhorses
Seems like 10 years ago
Though today my mind is slow
Me and Mickey Craig were running west from Idaho
Robbed a bank to get some bread
Seems like 15 men lay dead
In a path that led us straight to Santa Rosa

Now and then ol' Mick'd say
Boy at home you should of stayed
Than to follow me and learn the life of looking back
But he'd spit and slap his side
Just to see if he's alive
Then he'd sing his banjo song of Santa Rosa

He said whoa-oh, singing oh Santa Rosa
Whoa-oh, high and low-oh-oo
Then one day, sang ol' Craig,
I'll be free to go my way
And be standing by the bay at Santa Rosa

Now one time late at night
Mickey lit no fire light
Cause he feared the posse close behind might flush us out
But he picked a bit 'fore sleep
To the tune of Cripple Creek
He was murdered by a man from Santa Rosa

And he sang whoa-oh, singing oh Santa Rosa
whoa-oh, singing oh Santa Rosa
whoa-oh, high and low-o-o
Til I come once again with my banjo pickin' friend
We'll be oh high and low in Santa Rosa

Rock Island line is the road to ride
Ya, the Rock Island line

And if you want to ride
You gotta ride it

Get your ticket at the station
On the Rock Island line

22. Lot's of railroad people in my family.
My Mom's Dad's family were all railroaders. The area I grew up in is railroad central...the south suburbs of Chicago. The Illinois Central passes right through the center of town where I now live and I take a commuter train everyday down the IC tracks to work. I often think about all the people, especially Blues singers, who took the IC from the South up to Chicago.

Seems like I spent a lot of time when I was a youngster, sittin' in the back of my Dad's car, waiting at one train crossing or another.

30. My Baby Thinks He's A Train
by Rosanne Cash. :toast:

It's three a.m. in the morning,
The train whistle is blowin'.
It sounds like some lonesome song got in my soul,
In my soul.
My baby spent the bank and he won't be back no more.

My baby thinks he's a train.
He makes his whistle stop, then he's gone again.
Sometimes it's hard on a poor girl's brain,
A poor girl's brain.
I'm tellin' you, boys, my baby thinks he's a train.

Locomotion's the way he moves.
He drags me 'round just like an old caboose
I'm tellin' you, girls, that man's insane.
My baby thinks he's a train.

Instrumental break.

Choo, choo rages on, train sound.
It's the noise that you hear when my baby hits town.
With his long hair flyin', man, he's hard to take.
What you s'posed to do when your baby thinks he's a train?

He eats money like a train eats coal.
He burns it up and leaves you in the smoke.
If you wanna catch a ride, you wait 'til he unwinds.
He's just like a train, he always gives some tramp a ride.

Locomotion's the way he moves.
He drags me 'round just like an old caboose
I'm tellin' you, girls, that man's insane.
My baby thinks he's a train.

There's one in New Mexico and northern Cal. Maybe I did hear it at one point, but just don't remember. Thanks. I LOVE train songs too. Especially when the harmonica sounds like one. Growing up I thought someday we would run out of oil and the trains would come back again.

I love Michelle Shocked's version of this.

I was born and raised in the mouth of a Hazzard holler
Where the coal cars rolled and rumbled past my door
But now they stand in a rusty row of empties
'Cause the L&N don't stop here anymore.

46. What would a song list on DU be without something by Woody Guthrie?
THIS TRAIN IS BOUND FOR GLORY

This train is bound for glory, this train.
This train is bound for glory, this train.
This train is bound for glory,
Don't carry nothing but the righteous and the holy.
This train is bound for glory, this train.

This train don't carry no gamblers, this train;
This train don't carry no gamblers, this train;
This train don't carry no gamblers,
Liars, thieves, nor big shot ramblers,
This train is bound for glory, this train.

This train don't carry no liars, this train;
This train don't carry no liars, this train;
This train don't carry no liars,
She's streamlined and a midnight flyer,
This train don't carry no liars, this train.

This train don't carry no smokers, this train;
This train don't carry no smokers, this train
This train don't carry no smokers,
Two bit liars, small time jokers,
This train don't carry no smokers, this train.

This train don't carry no con men, this train;
This train don't carry no con men, this train;
This train don't carry no con men,
No wheeler dealers, here and gone men,
This train don't carry no con men, this train.

This train don't carry no rustlers, this train;
This train don't carry no rustlers, this train;
This train don't carry no rustlers,
Sidestreet walkers, two bit hustlers,
This train is bound for glory, this train.

or did they have a session player do it? I wondered because this is the first time I've listened to their version back to front...I really like the older versions of those songs better.

80. ok - I haven't written it down since I wrote it, actually! It's basically like this:
it's more sweet than rowdy - not like Lucinda WIlliams ;) ]]

Train Song

Oh Lonesome train
Rumble though the night
Silent whistle
I try to sleep
What will you offer me
Sleep
You beckon, you distance

Oh strong and huge
Powerful yet wistfful
Like a lumbering giant
who longs for tenderness
Giant
who longs for
who longs for

A home
A fire, a friend
Somewhere to go at the end of the day
A home, a fire, a friend
Somewhere to go at the end of the day

(bridge)
Where will you take them
City of trains
Where will you take them
City of trains

Woods and cities brightened
Woods and cities brightened
By your mournful moan
By your mournful moan

Oh Lonesome train
Rumble though the night
Silent whistle
I try to sleep
What will you offer me
Sleep
You beckon, you distance

on the web ( I don't know where the cd with that on it is)

I have to look and see where it is.

hell, if you want, I could probably send you an mp3 version.

It does have a nice melody. I do have a very nice acoustic version that my old bandmate and her husband did - maybe my husband could put it up somewhere. It's lovely. They recorded it since their kids really liked it. (which made me feel great, since it's my favorite of the songs I have written, for sentimental reasons. )

thanks for the nice words. "hi:

72. How about Runaway Train by Soul Asylum? I still remember how deeply that song affected me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNre5neZ6QI

Runaway Train by Soul Asylum

Call you up in the middle of the night
Like a firefly without a light
You were there like a blowtorch burning
I was a key that could use a little turning

So tired that I couldn't even sleep
So many secrets I couldn't keep
I promised myself I wouldn't weep
One more promise I couldn't keep

It seems no one can help me now,
I'm in too deep; there's no way out
This time I have really led myself astray

Runaway train, never going back
Wrong way on a one-way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there

Can you help me remember how to smile?
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded?
Life's mystery seems so faded

I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just a-drownin' in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train

And everything seems cut and dried,
Day and night, earth and sky,
Somehow I just don't believe it

Runaway train, never going back
Wrong way on a one-way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there

Bought a ticket for a runaway train
Like a madman laughing at the rain
A little out of touch, a little insane
It's just easier than dealing with the pain

Runaway train, never going back
Wrong way on a one-way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there

Runaway train, never coming back
Runaway train, tearing up the track
Runaway train, burning in my veins
I run away but it always seems the same

78. "Been On a Train" Laura Nyro
Been on a train
And did you hear the whistle blow?
Been on a train north
Baby did you hear the whistle blow?
I saw a man take a needleful of hard drug
And die slow.

Been on a train
And I'm never gonna be the same.

There's a bright light in the north wind
Gonna bring you home
Mister there's a bright light in the north wind
It's gonna bring you home
He said: "Sweet darling woman
Leave me alone".

Been on a train
And I'm never gonna be the same.

You got more tracks on you baby
Than the tracks of this train
You got no guts, no gospel
And you got no brains
He said: "I got just one thing
Gonna soothe my pain?"
No, no
Damn you mister
And I dragged him out the door
Damn you mister
And I dragged him out the door.

He died in the morning sun
And I ain't going north no more.

I suspect there's a train
Going north in a month or two
I still hear his words
He said: "There's nothing left to say or do"
But mister you were wrong
And I'm gonna sing my song for you.

Been on a train
And I'm never gonna be the same.

89. Did someone mention 'Last Train' by Travis?
Rain on the brain
Now there's flowers in your window
She, well she's so strange
I don't know anything about her
But if it's all the same to you
Here's what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna write a song
Gonna sing it to everyone
And then I'll sing it to you
'cos it was you that wrote it too
This could be the last train

Search within yourself for feelings
Everybody's got them
You left me on the shelf
And now there's no-one to rely on
But if it's all the same to you
Here's what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna buy a gun
Gonna shoot eberything, everyone
And then I'm coming for you
'cos it was you that drove me to
This could be the last train

Rear window
With the room in her hair
And on her jacket
There's a picture of Che Guevara
As he sits beneath the tree
But that's not important
But he looked a bit like me
If you took all the little feelings in your heart
And took all those little feelings all apart
Oh well now
What's the point in doing all of that?

91. Merle Haggard, "I Won't Give Up My Train"
I pulled into Memphis thirteen minutes early first time in two weeks
There's where she came to meet me as I stepped down off of 51 and needed sleep
And the baby's overdue I know you need some things
But the more that we discuss it it's the same

Long train rolling got a feeling and I'm knowing she's not waitin' for me
These rails keep gettin' longer and this feeling's gettin' stronger she won't let me be
I love my woman fire and rain but I won't give up my train

Baby came in April while I was in Chicago in the pouring rain
Black car and rusty tanker three boxcars and an empty sack of mail
And though I get lonely sometimes I know there's just no other way to explain

Long train rolling...
< guitar >
Long train rolling...

92. Midnight Train
by Darden Smith.

Always takes me away... and it doesn't hurt that I can hear the whistles from the Amtrak and the freightyards from my house -- a real midnight train never fails to bring that song to mind.

When the sun goes down
Out on my side of town
The darkness comes
Creepin' round.

And then you hear that midnight train
Calling out your name...

Oh, baby, yeah.
Some things never change.
Like the sound of a midnight train

102. Leadbelly's Midnight Special as sung by CCR
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DksGi7B5BdM

Well, you wake up in the morning
You hear the work bell ring
And they march you to the table
You see the same old thing

Ain't no food upon the table
And no fork up in the pan
But you better not complain, boy
You get in trouble with the man

Let the midnight special shine a light on me
Let the midnight special shine a ever-lovin' light on me

Yonder come miss Rosie
How in the world did you know
By the way she wears her apron
And the clothes she wore
Umbrella on her shoulder
Piece of paper in her hand
She come to see the governor
She want to free her man

If you're ever in Houston
Well you'd better do right
You'd better not gamble
And you better not fight at all
Or the sheriff will grab you
And the boys will bring you down
The next thing you know boy
Well, you're prison bound

--------------------------
I grew up thinking the 'midnight special' was a hooker, lol.

174. Don't forget Tons of Steel (I think that's the name)
From the GD's "In the Dark" CD. Great train song!

I've grown to know these rails
Like I know my lady's smile
Reseed a dozen dreams
In every passing mile
Can't begin to count the trips
That she and I have made
But I wish I had a dollar
For each time we've both been down this grade

Nine hundred thousand tons of steel
Made to roll
Her brakes don't work and this grade's so steep
Her engine's sure to blow

Nine hundred thousand tons of steel
Out of control
She's more a roller coaster
Than the train I used to know

It's one hell of an understatement
To say she can get mean
She's temperamental
More a bitch than a machine
She wasn't built to travel light
The speed a rumor flies
These wheels are bound to jump the tracks
Before they burn the ties

Nine hundred thousand tons of steel
Made to roll
Her brakes don't work and this grade's so steep
Her engine's sure to blow

Nine hundred thousand tons of steel
Out of control
She's more a roller coaster
Than the train I used to know

105. Driver 8, R.E.M.
The walls are built up, stone by stone,
The fields divided one by one
And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We've been on this shift too long"

And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We can reach our destination, but we're still a ways away"

I saw a treehouse on the outskirts of the farm
The power lines have floaters so the airplanes won't get snagged
Bells are ringing through the town again,
Children look up, all they hear is sky-blue, bells ringing

And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We can reach our destination, but we're still a ways away"
But we're still a ways away

Way to shield the hated heat
Way to put myself to sleep
Way to shield the hated heat
Way to put myself, my children to sleep

He piloted this song in a plane like that one
She is selling faith on the Go Tell crusade
Locomotive 8, Southern Crescent hear the bells ring again
Fields of wheat are lookin' thin

And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We've been on this shift too long"
And the train conductor says
"Take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break
We can reach our destination, but we're still a ways away"
But we're still a ways away

106. As usual, Tom Waits does not disappoint...
Train Song

Well I broke down in E. St. Louis
On the Kansas City line
and I drunk up all my money
that I borrowed every time
and I fell down at the derby
and now the night's black as a crow
It was a train that took me away from here
but a train can't bring me home
What made my dreams so hollow
was standing at the depot
with a steeple full of swallows
that could never ring the bell
and I come ten thousand miles away
with not one thing to show
well it was a train that took me away from here
but a train can't bring me home
I remember when I left
without bothering to pack
you know I up and left with
just the clothes I had on my back
now I'm sorry for what I've done
and I'm out here on my own
well it was a train that took me away from
here but a train can't bring me home

114. I lived on nothing but dreams and train smoke
PONY (Tom Waits)

I've seen it all boys I've been all over
Been everywhere in the Whole wide world
I rode the high line With old blind Darby
I danced real slow With Ida Jane
I was full of wonder When I left Murfreesboro
Now I am full of hollow On Maxwell street...

And I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
Knows the way back home

I walked from Natchez To Hushpukena
I built a fire by the side Of the road
I worked for nothin in a Belzoni saw mill.
I caught a Blind out on the B and O
Talullah's friendly Belzoni ain't so
A 44 will get you 99

And I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
Knows the way back home

I run my race with burnt face Jake
Gave him a Manzanita cross
I lived on nothing but dreams and train smoke
Somehow my watch and chain Got lost.
I wish I was home in Evelyn's Kitchen
With old Gyp curled around my feet

And I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
Knows the way back home
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
I hope my Pony
Knows the way back home

120. All aboard with Ozzy! I never knew all the lyrics but here they are.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTsvwBkVdKw

Crazy, but that's how it goes
Millions of people living as foes
Maybe it's not too late
To learn how to love
And forget how to hate

Mental wounds not healing
Driving me insane
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train

I've listened to preachers
I've listened to fools
I've watched all the dropouts
Who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you live the role

Mental wounds still screaming
Driving me insane
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train

I know that things are going wrong for me
You gotta listen to my words
Yeah

Heirs of a cold war
That's what we've become
Inheriting troubles I'm mentally numb
Crazy, I just cannot bear
I'm living with something that just isn't fair

Mental wounds not healing
Who and what's to blame
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train.

145. Red Streamliner - Little Feat

Red Streamliner
-- music by Bill Payne -- Lyrics
by Bill Payne and Fran Tate

Red streamliner rollin'
rollin' down the track the things you see
With your wheels in motion through desert, mountain, ocean
I hear you every night, is it a dream?

Red streamliner rollin' down, comin' down on me
Red streamliner rollin', rollin' long so free
Your past keeps comin' back on me
To far and near, away from here

Where people move a mile a minute
This hurricane livin' with you and me in it
Long into the night, that whistle offers light

Red streamliner rollin'
I wish you'd tell me 'bout the things you see
I'm lookin', lookin' down the tracks you ride
Knowin' that they're your only guide
I see them every night, is it a dream?
And when the sidewalks roll up at night
Just as stations pass by

Once the leader of the wild, wild west
Hurricane livin' been a lifelong song
Now you're cast of steel and cast aside
Broken dreams maybe, but you haven't died

164. La soledad
I wish I could find a you tube link to this song.

Solitude is something like
searching and not having whom to be with
solitude is something like
wanting to cry not knowing why
It is a lover on the tram
that waves an arm after the train
drawing solitude itself upon the air
it's seeing rain that's coming down
on empty streets and having not
a single story one can tell, or can forget
it is like walking and not knowing
a single place to leave behind
this solitude that it may rest,
at least a while

- Alberto Cortez

176. "Texas Eagle" by Steve Earle
My Grandaddy was a railroad man
When I was young he took me by the hand
Dragged me to the station at the break of dawn
Said "Boy I got to show you somethin' 'fore it's gone"
She was blue and silver - she was right on time
We rode that Texas Eagle on the Mopac line
We had some sandwiches that Grandma packed
We rode to Palestine and hitchhiked back
Home in time for supper with a tale to tell
That night I dreamed I heard that lonesome whistle wail

When I got old enough to take the train alone
I rode that Texas Eagle down to San Antone

Nowadays they don't make no trains
Just the piggyback freighters and them Amtrak things
They shut the Eagle down awhile ago
Sold it to the railroad down in Mexico
But every now and then that whistle's on my mind
I ride that Texas Eagle ‘cross the borderline
