WTF is an ERA+, and how come it ain't got a decimal? :shrug:

5. ERA+ is a league and year adjusted value

So that 100 is average and anything below 100 is below league average and anything above is above league average; it's useful because it tells you how good a pitcher is relative to that specific year.

You can do lots of stats that are like this: OPS+ is one of the most common and IMO most useful stats to see just how great a hitter is.

9. OPS is good

but I rarely use it because I'm old 'n' stuff. Just tell me a guy's batting average, slugging average and on-base percentage. I also wanna know RBI, but that leads to the question, "Who hits in front of him?"

I've been a stats freak since I was about 10 — one of my ideal jobs would be as a club's statistician — but I'm not like the SABR dudes in that I don't see a need to make up new ones. I like to study the old standards and make my own analyses.
