I'm going to be a mommy!!!!
We've finally decided we're getting a dachshund puppy next month. I've already found some boots that we're going to get him for when it's wet. And we're going to name him Barney. I can't wait!!
Wait...did you think I meant something else?

2. Those are SO cute!
A gal I once worked with raised those types of dogs and one day she brought a basket of puppies in. Of course, everyone dropped what they were doing to make a mad dash to hold the tiny rounded rectangles of fur. Don't spoil him now!

13. Congrats but hold off on the name
When you meet the puppy and have him in your house, another name may sound better.
I had names in mind when I decided to adopt my kitties. Somehow when I got them, I chose entirely different names. It was as though they told me what names they wanted.

22. Just wipe their feet off with a towel when you come home from a walk.
Dachshunds typically will not wear any sort of clothing. Anyway, their little legs are so short, the boots could get in the way of walking and peeing. When the girl Doxies pee it gets all over the bottom of their back feet becuase the puddle spreads.

Have fun with your new family member!

20. Congrats! Don't let him jump up stuff and climb up and down stairs too much.
Edited on Fri May-04-07 04:01 PM by tandot
Stairs and other things they have to jump on can put a strain on their back. A friend of mine had to put his dachshund down because his back was sever ly injured.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dachshund

The breed is known to have spinal problems, especially intervertebral disk disease, due in part to an extremely long spinal column and short rib cage. The risk of injury can be worsened by obesity, which places greater strain on the vertebrae. In order to prevent injury, it is recommended that dachshunds be discouraged from jumping and taking stairs, and encouraged to instead take the elevator (though some veterinarians say that slow stair-climbing is unlikely to lead to injury). Holding the dog properly is important, with both front and rear portions of the body fully supported.

23. Please, please take care of you little fur baby`s back!
I`m a former doxie mom. My little girl herniated a disk in her back from jumping off the couch. I had to put her down. The bill for MRI and surgery would have been $6,000. If I ever got another doxie I would purchase insurance for her. Don`t mean to bring you down. It`s just my 2 cents. Doxies are absolutely the best. Great personalities, just a bit on the stubborn side. But, wonderful, happy little dogs. You also have to be very strict with the feeding, because mine would have eaten more than a teen-age boy, if I would have let her. Their little behinds are just made for sitting up to beg!!

24. They have a thing at the Petsmart here...
I think it's 20 bucks a month. And I'm sure we'll get it. And I have a cousin who had one, and he's giving great advice. Thanks for the advise, too!
