14. Happy Beltane, y'all!
I also remember May Poles from elementary school. Perhaps that was a more innocent time, because I haven't seen one outside of Pagan circles since.

15. I danced around one at the May Day debutante event at my private girls school back in the 1970s.
Edited on Tue May-01-07 12:58 PM by CottonBear
The local boys prep schools held an alternative May Day event called the May Hole: they danced a round a pole stuck in a hole in the ground.
I was such an innocent young prep school girl that I didn't realize at first that the May Pole was so phallic. Of the six grades (7th - 12th), only sophmores danced around the poles (about 10 of them set up on a big lawn.)

31. I've heard two stories
One is,like so many upthread have pointed out, that it is an ancient fertility dance.
The other story I've heard is that it is an ancient astronomical tradition. It is a combination of timekeeper and map of the heavens. Each ribbon was tied to a rock in a way that left it lined up with celestial bodies. The wrapping part came when the astronomers, apparently mainly women,in the originating culture were securing their tools of the trade till they were needed again.Sorta how present day astronomers put up their telescopes for the day now.
At some point it obviously evolved into a celebration.
I think one of the reasons it fell out of vogue is because of the fact that May Day is associated with communism in many peoples eyes.I'm sure the rise of the religous right had something to do with it also.
