Man Admits To Shooting Two Nesting Ospreys Because They Were "Annoying"

BARTOW, Fla. -- A Bartow man is facing serious charges for fatally shooting two ospreys he says were "annoying."

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said Travis Grace is charged with two counts of killing a migratory bird. It's a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by a maximum $500 fine and 60 days in jail for each count.

The birds were building a nest on a tree in his yard.

Officials said he told his neighbors he shot them with a pellet gun because their noise annoyed him. He also said their nesting material would kill the other trees in his yard.

Grace was released on bond earlier this week. The FWC is investigating.

No eggs were found in the nest.

If you actually cannot live with the noise of a migratory bird, there are other ways to get them to leave. A bright light on their nest and some loud noises for a day or so would have been sufficient to get them to move elsewhere. This guy needs to sit in a jail cell and ponder his stupidity a while.
