Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 07:52 AM by pokerfan
Pretty much sums it up. I climbed it in 86 and 87.

Awesome experience. That was the hardest walk I have ever done.

14. Wow, that's quite an accomplishment.
A good friend of mine is a Ranier climbing guide. From what he tells me, it's a mother to make it to the top.

2. My dear pokerfan!
That is by far my favorite mountain!

I've never climbed it, but I have been nearby, and I am always blown away by how beautiful it is...

Thanks for the great pic!

3. never climbed it, but was fascinated, hooked, enthralled
when we visited the national park several years ago. The smell of the air, the views of the mountain, the grove of the patriarchs, etc. etc.

We camped for only 2 nights and spent the days touring the mountain. I would love to go back.

Could you please post more pictures of your climb?

6. I have some questions...
I sent your link to my hubby, and he has a couple questions ...

Did you make it to the top during your climb?

Is the hut you stayed at on the Sunrise side or the Paradise side?

thanks ever so much if you care to answer his questions!

7. Yes we made it
We didn't stay in a hut, we camped on the glacier. We were at Camp Schurman and the hut is for the rangers only. That would be the Sunrise side.
I heard the bridge to Paradise was washed out this winter and there is currently no access to the area.

15. I need a scanner
Did all my climbing before I had a digicam.

Baker, Hood, Adams, Glacier Peak, Rainier and Athabasca were the large peaks.

8. It's on my list of peaks to bag.
I'm climbing Shasta next year, and want to bag either Rainier or Hood the year after that.

This summer is dedicated to Yosemite...I've had a few on my to-do list for far too long.

9. I've stayed at Paradise Lodge twice
I would like to go up to the camp -- is it Muir's? But, my tres bad fear of heights would stop me from anything more.

12. Camp Muir
While it is at 10K feet, I never got the feeling of any great elevation. Beyond Muir is where you definitely get the feeling that you could literally fall off the mountain.

For a hike, one could always do a portion of the Wonderland trail which encircles the mountain.

16. That's good to know
I'd like to head back out there ina year or two, and an overnight at Camp Muir would be great.

Congrats on your summits!

17. Hiking to Camp Muir
Pretty good trip report:
http://nasak.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!ED9E9A17FDF45D58!1180.entry

The hut at Camp Muir is first-come, first served so you can't count on it. I stayed in the hut once and in a tent another time. I much prefered the tent to the noise (snoring, farting) of the hut. Plus the mice! Mice at 10,000 feet! Mice got into most everyone's food. For some reason I had my food inside my cooking tins so they didn't get at my victuals.

19. Thanks for this link -- I can definitely do this
The attitude might affect me a little, but I trail run, so I'm in okay shape.

Every time I've been it's been in July and there's still snow there. One year, there was still well over 10 feet!

I have done Ranier, Mt. Hood, and the Mt. St. Helens hikes. I am a Scoutmaster here in the Portland area and we are gearing them up for Ranier and Mt. St. Helens.
