Have you ever considered changing your name?
And if so, what would you change it to?

Me? I've thought about changing my name to MR. BARKY VON SNAUZER....

I love attention.

1. Yes
My partner and I are both still carrying the last names of our ex-husbands. We've considered changing both of our names to either my maiden name or her maiden name (we don't like hyphenated names, so combining them is out). That way we'll all have the same last name. :)

2. When I was preschool-age
I was told getting married meant changing your name. So I asked the boy next door to marry me so I could change my name to "Betty." True story.

3. yeah, i'm not a fan of my last name
it's not especially long, but people keep misprounouncing it because it's not pronounced like it's spelled. Plus, it's not even the family name, my grandfather changed it two years after my father was born, so there's not even history attached to it.

5. Yes...I am in fact doing so.
I'm named after my bio-dad, a semi-notorious convicted felon here in CT.

At the age of 27, I'm sick of being confused with that asshole. The state is making it hard, saying that if I was really that upset about it, I'd have done it at 18. :banghead:

8. I don't understand how the state can make it hard.
You have every right to change your name as long as you are an American citizen, have no convictions or warrants against you, and have never been involved in a lawsuit (in those cases, I would imagine that it is either not-allowed, or requires going through more red-tape.)

That's really horrible if they are making it hard for you simply because your father is a convicted felon. Sins of the father and all that. What a crock.

11. It has to be signed off on by the probate judge...
who has "an obligation to examine the reasons."

Basically, he thinks I'm a liar and I am trying to cover something up (or hide...i.e. from a paternity judgment.) or else I'd have done this years ago.

Not hard because daddy is a convicted felon...hard because the judge doesn't believe me that is the reason for the filing.

13. A friend
is going through the sex reassignment process. In addition to trying to save up for the surgery, she is fighting Illinois to get her name changed from the male moniker she was given at birth to her female name. And let's not even go into all the red tape she will have to fight through to get her gender changed on official documents like her driver's license.

I think they make it such a difficult and expensive process to discourage fraud and raise money for the state.

34. It varies greatly from state to state.
From what I've heard Massachusetts is one of the easiest states to get your name changed in. I once got into a debate with an aunt about whether or not she accidentally changed her name.

6. yes
my twin sister and I have the same first name. We have different middle names and social security numbers, but that difference hasn't been enough for the State's voter registry, or one of the major credit bureaus to be able to distinguish us.

Since I use both my first and middle names (she just uses her middle name) I thought I might just stick them together into one name.

12. Conversion
I'm considering starting classes to convert to Judaism. If I go through with it, I would have to declare a Hebrew name. While I would keep my legal name, the Hebrew name would be used on any temple documents and would probably become my legal name should I ever have to emmigrate to Israel.

I'm leaning toward Kelila bat Abraham. Kelila because I like it and it's close to my given name, and "bat Abraham" is one of the common surnames for female converts. It recognizes that the person is now a daughter of Abraham.

In the Society for Creative Ananchronism, I am known under my Viking name of Kolgrimma "Edda" Eiriksdottir.

Actually, I thought of changing my middle name years ago but I've really come to like it. Sometimes I wish I could go by it instead of my first name--"Rob" is pretty vanilla.

27. Yes, I have
I don't care for my first name at all, and except for family and close friends of the family, I don't go by my first name. All my credit cards, my driver's license and other important documents have my first name on them, and I really hate having to call customer service and give them my first name, so I've been seriously considering the name change process (at least here in New Jersey, it's a fairly complicated and expensive process, which is why I keep putting it off.)

BTW, Mr. Barky von Schnauzer's an AWESOME name! :P

29. Now and then I insert an ennobling "von" before my last name
and it sounds rather amusingly pompous. The name could be Norwegian or German or from Elsass-Lothringen (Alsace-Lorraine).

30. I did consider it, once upon a time.
Went through a period of time when I hated my first name.

Partly, it was when I was going through a rough patch with my dad (I'm named after him), and partly, it was because I kept finding characters in songs, TV shows, and movies that had my name, and they were usually developmentally disabled and/or prostitutes. I don't mean a slam against either of those groups of people, but they were ALWAYS portrayed as losers.

Now, however, I love my name. It's not real common as a first name, and I rather like that.

And, one of my very favorite songs' titles is my first name.

31. I changed part of my name.
I changed my middle name to my maiden name and took my husband's last name. It all sounds so much more french, which I love!

I was also thinking of changing my first name from Erica to America. Nothing would really change as far as what my friends call me, but I thought it was cool. What can I say? I was born two days after the bicentennial. I might one day, but no plans as of now.

32. I Did Change My Name When I Was But a Child
I started using another name and even had my Social Security records changed to reflect it. I was in high school, so I wasn't a little tiny child, but I was pretty young. I still use that name - it's my legal name - although to make my husband happy I sometimes go by Mrs G.

33. I changed the spelling of my first name when....
I was in high school because I was into Numerology and wanted to be a "three" instead of a "two" or something. No big deal, I guess, although the original spelling was more true to my heritage.

When I married, I kept my "maiden" name, which is actually my step-father's name. I would like to go back to my birth name, but between being married and the fact that my most of my life is in my step-father's name, it all just seems entirely too complicated.

I'm not sure it matters that much as far as the big picture.

Too bad you've already claimed Barky Von Snauzer. That would be a dandy name!
