A cop just handed me a cashier's check for $2,000.

Just a note that sometimes the system works.

Many moons ago, I wrote a few checks to my ex-nightmare to help her with some bills. After she scooted, I convinced her to write me a check to pay back some of it. I was happy to settle for anything, really.

So she wrote me a post-dated check and left town. I immediately deposited it.

She apparently had a rotten vacation, as all the money was gone from her account. Boo hoo. But somehow she convinced her bank to reverse the charge and return the check. Well, whatever. I re-deposited it. It naturally came back with a stop-payment on it.

So I visited the local marshal, asked if it was a civil matter or if there was anything he could do. He said he'd talk to the DA, and lo and behold he did. They sent her a nasty letter threatening fraud charges.

It worked. The marshal told me, while handing me the cashier's check, of the last exchange he had with her:

"Can I write a check for this?"
"Uh, no."

Anyhow. It's going toward a wedding, which is a nice finish. :toast:
