1. I went to SUNY Fredonia but know some people who went there.
Everyone I have talked to loved it!

Watch out for that wind, though!!

Living with a roommate can be cool or it can suck -- it depends on how compatible you are. I switched roommates half way through my first semester. My first roommate wasn't a bad guy, but we didn't have much in common. You definitely need to compromise on a lot of things...but it's not too bad.

I could not wait to leave home and go to college -- it was an unbelievable feeling to not have to worry about parents keeping tabs on you.

Don't be too anxious; you are going to have a great time. Don't forget that there are going to be a lot of people in the same boat as you. You will be fine.

2. I'm using this as an excuse to get a new winter wardrobe!
I laugh in the face of wind! :silly:

I actually think i'll be able to get along pretty well with any roommate i encounter.. simply because i'm so excited in having a fresh start, i'd really like to actually make friends this time around (didn't do so well in high school, hehe)

Its just hard not to have anxiety.. ah well.. going to see a psychologist maybe.

Thanks for the response :D

Now I just need to figure out a list of things to bring!

3. Congrats!!

Good work!

I didn't go there, but I'm in the Land of SUNY (they're everywhere), and Oswego has a really good reputation.

Ditto about that wind--yer gonna be laughing a lot, I tell ya whut. My high school boyfriend went there, and he told me that in the winter, there are ropes put out all over campus to help get students from building to building--you hang on, duck your head, and forge ahead. And if I recall correctly, I think sometimes they have "high wind days" which is a warning to underweight students. Seriously.

As for college life, I guarantee that no matter how excited you are to be going to college, you are going to be SOOO homesick the first few weeks. Ride it out; it goes away. After that, when I had to go home even for a weekend visit, I was irritated--I wanted to stay at school.

Roommates...some colleges do their best to place you with someone you at least have a few things in common with. Sometimes they succeed, and sometimes they don't. It's a crap shoot--your roommate could turn out to be your best friend, or you might fail to connect, and then you just coexist in the same room, two ships passing in the night, as you ride out the school year. Then the following year you get to choose your roommate--much better.

I second the lots-of-compromises thing. Small rooms, two distinct personalities...be really, really diplomatic.

One thing my brother told me before I went to college, and it saved my life plenty of times: Yes, you SHOULD party on the weekends. College is as much about social development as it is higher education. But before you set one foot out of your dorm to any kind of party whatsoever, be sure you have finished your homework. That's right--do your homework on Friday afternoon, so it's not hanging over your head all weekend and then you rush to get it done Sunday night. Granted, you won't always be able to abide by this rule, but do it as often as possible and you'll have an amazing amount of peace of mind--much more than your slacker friends and dormmates.

Thus endeth the sermon.

Most important: ENJOY IT! It can be the best four years of your life if you play it right.

4. Okay, i admit it.. i wasn't expeting THAT much wind!
That sounds.. delightful! heh heh.

Home sickness.. yes.. i think i will be very homesick :) but in the end.. i'm sure it will be good for me.

I'm definitely looking forward to the social aspects of living on campus, hopefully this will be the opportunity i need to really break out of my shell. The amazing thing is, though, aside from such social aspects of college.. i actually feel like im really learning valuable information regarding the field i am studying.. something I never would've thought possible a few years ago!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful response :hi:

12. That is a true statement about the ropes between the buildings.
It gets pretty windy with that wind whipping off of the lake.

7. The poor furball will be staying home
To be tormented by my brother and parents :( I will miss the bugger, but its probably best. God forbid something should happen to him in the dorm.. I'd be heartbroken.

Anywho.. yep.. i'm finally getting out of the house after spending four semesters at community college! i *think* i'm ready!!
Thanks for the warm words :)

14. I had a supervisor once who did
During the 70's. Jerry Seinfeld dated one of her dorm-mates.

15. My father's coworker..
has a daughter who is going. He is supposedly going to introduce me to her. If only my mouth weren't being held shut with rubberbands!

Seinfeld is actually a relatively common sight here in NY, apparently (i've never seen him.. not really too interested in scoping out celebrities anyway :silly: )

17. My oldest son went there
He loved it.

Lots of bars, and of course he ended up working as a bartender in his last year.

Good luck. You'll do just fine.

20. He's a very good Democrat, at that.
He ended up on the Democratic County Committee, while there. Registered more than 100 new voters in the 2004 election, and held a pig roast to raise money so that his little group of libs could make a pilgrimage to Ohio to work for John Kerry.

There's a great seafood drive-in style restaurant called Rudy's that is walking distance from campus along the lake shore.

Cam's NY Pizza -- another place my son worked, has the best pizza.

Winter's are brutal, but I would think of it as a fun adventure.

don't sweat living with a roommate, chances are they just as nervous as you living away from home for the first time. Seriously college is a blast, tons of people out there with the same interests as you. My advice join some on campus group so you can find a group of like minded individuals. Oh and don't overdo it with the keggers your freshman year (it can be hell to pull yourself out of a hole if you tank your GPA) :P

But in all seriousness my best friend is my college roommate, we hang out all the time

22. Thanks for the reassurance
I've always been shy, i'm just hoping ill a) have my ability to speak back in time and b) will have the nerve to be as humorous in person as I can (rarely) be on DU!

This will actually be my fifth semester, ive just been at home going to community college.. but trust me, i'm concerned about my grades anyway :)

Its funny how stressful this whole situation can be. One minute, i feel like a kid going to disney land, and the next I feel like i'm about to get pulled over by the 5-0 :silly:
