Robbie Robertson appreciation thread
Here's a guy who went solo and didn't get nearly as much attention as he deserved (much like Aimee Mann).

I love "Showdown at Big Sky". The melody is just terrific.

Robbie's voice is probably the sexiest I've ever heard.

Soldier of fortune
He's a man of war
Just can't remember
What he's fighting for
Start a revolution
Right before your eyes
When you hear the big bang
Don't you be surprised

Showdown at Big Sky
Darkness at high noon
Showdown at Big Sky
That day may be soon

And people, people
Can you hear the sound
From every village and every town
Let the bells ring out
Hear the bells ring in
Let the bells ring out
Keep them ringing, ringing

Can't predict the future
Can't forget the past
Feels like any moment
Could be the last
All you believers
Standing inside this room
Can't you see it coming
Shooting out across the moon

Save this place
In the valley of tears
By the river of time
From weapons race
In the Book of David
In the holy night
When it's laid to waste
It will be written
By the children of Eden
I said save this place
And the Holy Ghost

Showdown at Big Sky
Darkness at high noon
Showdown at Big Sky
That day may be soon

And people, people
Can you hear the sound
From every village and every town
Let the bells ring out
Hear the bells ring in
Let the bells ring out
Keep them ringing, ringing

Save this place
In the valley of tears
By the river of time
From the weapon's race
In the Book of David
In the holy night
When it's laid to waste
It will be written
By the children of Eden
I said save this place
And the Holy Ghost
And the Holy Ghost

Showdown at Big Sky
Darkness at high noon
Kiss tomorrow goodbye
That day could be soon

4. I love that CD - Hell's Half Acre and Lazy River are particular favs of mine...
I like his Native American CD's too. He's just awesomely cool, and always has been. I've had a huge crush on him for years. And yes - he does have the sexiest voice. He also looks pretty damn good too. I'd show him my appreciation personally anytime!

5. He's one of my favorites
you're right, he never got the attention he deserved as a singer, songwriter or guitarist.

6. I first saw him...

in "Carny" when I was a hormone-riddled 13 year old, and was like...."Who is THAT??"

Never had much exposure to The Band as a youngster, but had to go out and buy some. He just OOZED sex in that movie. It gave me a fascination for the dark, exotic Native types that lingers to this day (married me a Metis from Alberta).

Robbie is going to be like Sean Connery and Joe Ely. 80+ years old and still hot as hell.

Oh...and on edit...decent musician too! :D

"Broken Arrow" is gorgeous, though I have no idea what it's about.

9. Storeyville is my favourite album
I'm here in the south of England but every time I listen to the album I get a picture of what New Orleans must have been like.

12. It's on my list of 10 CDs to have on a deserted island
He's got some pretty good background singers on that CD too... Aaron Neville, Neil Young...

17. That was my favorite album of 1987
I had been a big fan of The Band for many years, and couldn't wait for the solo debut of their best songwriter to come out. I was not disappointed. "Fallen Angel" was a moving tribute to former Band-mate Richard Manuel, who had committed suicide the year before. Not a weak cut on the album.

If you haven't yet, check out the DVD of Martin Scorsese's "The Last Waltz", which documents The Band's farewell concert from Thanksgiving Day 1976. Plenty of interview footage of Robertson and the others.

He has managed to be a part of some solid rock history over the decades. He was 15 in 1960 when he played the blistering solo on Ronnie Hawkins' cover of "Who Do You Love?" - it was a fairly major hit single at the time. He was barely 21 when he played guitar for Bob Dylan on one of the greatest albums of all time, "Blonde On Blonde".

Don't know what he has been up to lately, but anything he does is worth checking out.

18. I got to see The BAnd back in the 70's....
They were so great together...

I bought his first solo CD about 15 years ago and I lent it to a freind and she won't give it back...
