I almost killed our smoke detector last night and it's still on borrowed time.
The fucking thing is too close to the kitchen and went off last night from a combination of broiling steak and boiling pasta.

I was whipping the towel at it and it wouldn't stop shrieking. The night before I scored a direct hit and knocked it off the ceiling.

We have a really old stove and I think the fan above it makes noise but doesn't actually do anything.

My husband is a firefighter and even though there are smoke detectors in my kids rooms, less than 3 feet away from this one - he will not move this detector.

So how often does your smoke detector go off?

1. I am so thankful for mine ...
I have burn marks on my arm to prove it.

3. We had a really bad fire at my family home, unfortunately a
smoke detector wouldn't have helped because no one was home. I am pro-smoke detector, they do save so many lives - I just think we have too many and this one is in a bad spot.

5. change it
you probably have an ionization detector, those are prone to false alarms. They'll go off even with steam from a shower. Get yourself a photoelectric detector at your local hardware or home improvement store. They're no more expensive than the ionization type but save your ears and peace of mind.
