My kid turned me on to these guys and gals:
http://www.myspace.com/thecoupmusic This band is like the musical offspring of Rage Against the
Machine, P-funk, and Malcolm X. Well, actually it has former members
of Rage and P-Funk, and a bunch of other people too. Their newest
single calls for troops in Iraq to mutiny. The song is the theme for
a documentary titled "Sir! No Sir!". Their blerb says "The film is
about G.I. rebellion during the Vietnam war (at one point a Pentagon
report deemed half of the soldiers in Vietnam as "mutinous and not to
be trusted"), and the song is inspired by the stories that some of
the veterans tell in the film. It turns out that the largely
unreported g.i. rebellions played a very important role in stopping
the Vietnam war."
He talks about the movement to distribute their music to troops
stationed in Iraq. One guy has even started volunteering at "support
our troops" organizations and slipping the CD into care packages.
The band is called The Coup.
If the people on DU or whatever haven't been talking about this
band, you should copy and paste this and post it there. Or just give
them the link and let them figure it out for themselves. Regardless,
I think the word needs to get out. Or, as those t-shirts and bumper
stickers say, "stop whining and start a revolution." But do check
that people on DU haven't actually been talking about it already,
because then I'd kinda seem like a preachy ass. I don't actually
know these people, I just think they should know about this stuff.
I believe this material, implemented in the proper way (i.e. widely
distributed, especially to our troops), holds much more clout than,
say, photoshop contests or humorous flash movies. But don't take my
word for it, go to their site, read what they have to say.
They're also extremely catchy and funky.
