Most Grimly Grateful
I am alive and unhurt, and so are most of my friends. One of my acquaintances is seriously wounded. I still haven't heard from a few. I do not know if any of my classmates are among the injured and killed.

There will be some time of sadness and apprehension, and then my life will be mostly as it was. 32 of us 30,000 are dead, and I am not hurt directly. I and almost everyone I know have had classes in that building. I understand how profoundly and greatly fortunate I am.

But what will I do for the several people I care about who now morn for murdered friends or wait for news from the hospitals?

1. Oh, my God. You poor, poor thing.
As for what you do for the mourning, you don't have to do anything, just be a friend.

2. CB, I am so glad you are okay.

I know first hand how this can affect a person. As to what you will do, be there for them the best you can. You cannot bring back those who died; but you can comfort those whose loved ones were killed or wounded. Just be there. It can mean a great deal.

And if you need it, let others be there for you, too.

Just be there for your friends, that's all you can do right now. They will let you know what they need from you.

5. I cannot imagine what you are going through.

I think back to being in college and just can't picture it. All I can tell you is ever since you first posted yesterday, I've been thinking about you and everyone else there. Take care of yourself.

6. I am so glad you are OK
also that most of your friends are.

Be there for the friends who need help. Support them in ways you are able to. It may "only" be by words or by listening to them.

8. The horrors everyone at VT endured yesterday is unimaginable.
Thank you for having the presence of mind to be able to post throughout that and keep us informed of what was going on.

I hope that no one else that you know was injured or killed. The one is bad enough.

10. Honey,

You've been in my thoughts a great deal.

There was not a quieter, more somber moment in my class last night than when my professor acknowledged the tragedy at your school.

You're all being sent loving vibes from people everywhere.
I'm so glad you're safe, and so sorry that everyone was not so fortunate.

What an incomprehensible event. All you can do for your friends is let them lean on you. And I suggest you do some leaning in return. At times like this, we need to know there are people around us who we can count on, if only for a

15. I've met another of the victims once or twice, but didn't recognize his name.

I remember seeing him. There are pictures of us at the same party. He is expected to recover fully.
