Nothing sucks quite so bad as losing a grandparent.
Nothing. Especially one who was not just a grandfather, but also a neat man, and a good friend.

RIP JB.

2. My grandparents save one had died years before I was born.
My remaining grandmother died when I was 8. Both my parents are also dead. I have had more than one close friend die.

There are worse things.

Sorry for your loss.

8. two of mine died decades before I was born, the other two died before
I was three. Not to say that there are worse things - but to instead suggest that overtime let grief fade into thankfulness for having the opportunity for the benefit of that relationship.

Peace to JanMichael and all whose lives are deeply touched by this loss.

17. You are right that things like this are relative to individuals.
And that individual loss is powerful regardless.

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

16. Thanks.
He was a good guy. Very understanding and forgiving. Actually just a really nice old guy.

But to be honest he was ready to go and I'm happy for him. He was 88 and lived a good long life.

6. I am sorry for your loss
But be grateful that you had him so long. Like one of the earlier posters, my grandparents died before I was born and one of my parents died when I was still a child.

I know how you feel. I lost one grandmother this fall, and could very well lose the other in the near future.

Best wishes to you and yours. May your grandfather rest peacefully.

9. I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather
My grandparents were also amazing. I'm guessing you must be young, because I this point in my life nothing sucks quite so bad as losing a parent. Good luck.

Cheers.

21. 38.
Thing is that there has been only one close family death for me (1988) which I know is uncommonly fortunate.

The parents are in the 60's and in good health but I realize that they are all pushing old age. But I imagine that losing a parent or child would truly be painful it's just that my situation makes this one hard.

Thanks.

11. I lost my Grandmothers and one Grandfather in 1994, 1995, and 1996.
It was really hard time.

They were in their middle 90's so they had a good, long, healthy life until the last few years.

I miss them.

I had a close bond with my grandpa too. It's hard to explain your sorrow to those who never knew their's. Just try to remember him and grieve in your own way.

19. I'm sorry.
I lost my grandfather three weeks ago. I didn't feel much like talking about it on DU and haven't, but it was hard. Not unexpected, but still hard. He was sometimes more of a dad to me than my own dad was at times. I understand.

I lost my grandpa when I was 16 and he was like my dad too. I still miss him to this day.

I had the most incredible dream a few years ago about him. I was with him and he had his arms around me. We stood there and hugged and hugged - I woke up crying because it was so real - I felt those hugs and it was overwhelming.

I wish you great hugs from your grandpa too. Until then I can only offer you one of mine
